Network and Server Training and Courses
A network consists of two or more computers that are connected to shared resources (such as printers and CDs), exchange files, or allows electronic communications. A computer network consists of interconnected computers, printers, routers, network switches and other devices which transmit data to each other by a predefined protocol, such as TCP / IP. Network topology describes the pattern for the different nodes (units) in the network that are interconnected. The underlying network technology limits the topologies that are possible.
Computers on a network can be connected via cables, telephone lines, radio waves, satellites, or infrared light. The two basic types of networks are:
- Local Area Network (LAN)
- Wide Area Network (WAN)
You may also see references to a Metropolitan Area Network (MAN), a wireless LAN (WLAN) or wireless WAN (WWAN).
Local Area Network (LAN)
A Local Area Network (LAN) is a network that is limited to a relatively small area. It is generally confined to a geographical area as a writing lab, school, or building. Rarely are LAN computers more than a 2 km apart.
In a typical LAN configuration, a computer is designated as a file server. It stores all the software that controls the network, as well as the software that can be shared by the computers attached to the network. Computer with access to the file server are called workstations. The workstations can be less powerful than the file server, and they may have additional software on their hard drives. In many LANs cables are used to connect the network card in each computer, other LANs can also be wireless.
Wide Area Network (WAN)
Wide Area Networks (WAN) connect larger geographic areas, such as the UK, the US, or the world. Dedicated ocean crossing cable or satellite uplinks may be used to connect this type of network. By using a WAN, computers in the UK communicate with places like Tokyo in a few minutes, without paying huge phone bills. A WAN is more complex as it uses Multiplexers which connect local and metropolitan networks to global communications networks like the Internet. To users, however the WAN does not look very different than LAN.

A server is primarily a program running on a machine that gives a special and specific service to other machines connected to the machine.
Generally, a server is a machine with a specific set of programs that offer different kinds of services that other machines (formerly known as clients) request to perform specific tasks. For example, a file server is a machine that keeps files and allows customers to upload and download from them. A web server is a machine that hosts the Web sites and allows Internet users (customers) to gain access to these sites. An e-mail server is a machine that store and manage e-mail messages, provides service to e-mail users can read, retrieve, and manage e-mail messages. Today, server functionality has become so complex and varied that there are many very powerful computers dedicated to solely servers. This has led many non-technical people to designate servers and machines running services.
