This comprehensive one-day training course in Communication & Negotiation Skills will provide your staff with the skills to effectively handle both simple and complex negotiations, with a view to actively avoiding legal claims.

The 1-day programme is designed to be highly practical, providing delegates with the chance to practise their skills in a realistic but safe environment. By the end of the course, they will:

  • Understand the principles of effective communication and negotiation
  • Appreciate the key issues in negotiation and communication
  • Possess tools and techniques needed to succeed
  • Know how to effectively resolve conflict

The skills gained will enable them to recover from weak negotiating positions, prepare for the unexpected and make relationships work despite conflict.

Where do we start?

  • Introduction – What is the cost of failure? What are the benefits of good negotiation?
  • What always goes wrong? – The conflict between price and profit
  • Power – Have you got it or not?

Getting Clarity on the Issues

  • Communication Skills – Listening, Acknowledgement and Relationship Building
  • A look at simple ways to isolate issues
  • The issues – What is personal, commercial, emotional or relevant?
  • Checklist menu of preparation tools with how and when to use them

Negotiation

  • Separating interests from positions
  • Setting levels, best position, best alternative position, best alternative to a negotiated agreement
  • Must haves, tradeables and walk ways
  • Gauging the sensitivities of the opposite team – verbal and non-verbal signs
  • Using time, difference and power in your favour

Negotiation Tools and Tips

  • A run through of the most effective current techniques in negotiation from Harvard and around the world
  • Generating options
  • Linkage and de-linkage
  • Different styles and how to work with them
  • High – low perceived value and exchange

Conflict Resolution

  • Protecting yourself and putting escalation in place
  • Challenging assumptions, judgements and perceptions
  • Minding your language, body language and tone
  • Getting more from the deal

Exercises

  • There will be a number of interactive exercises in which delegates will be able to practice and observe aspects of negotiation.
