Asbestos Awareness (UKATA) - Half-day course by HSS Training

This intensive training session, covering asbestos legislation and health & safety best practice, is accredited by UKATA and delivered by HSS Training. The course starts off by providing knowledge and awareness of what asbestos is, where it is likely to be found and which actions should be taken to prevent its damaging health effects.

The course meets the requirements of the control of asbestos regulations 2012. It explores the negative impact of being exposed to asbestos, around properties or while handling materials, by looking at health considerations, visual recognition, the way asbestos control is regulated in the UK.

A description about what asbestos is, the varying types and the history of its uses

• Where asbestos is found
The types of environment in which asbestos is found and where it will be discovered by the variety of building trades 

• Visual recognition
Images of asbestos in use to relate various situations

• Heath effects
The negative impact on the lungs (lung cancer, asbestosis, pleural plaques, pulmonary function impairment) and other organs

• Risk assessment
Identifying hazards and risks in typical workplaces where asbestos may be found

• Principles of control
Understanding simple strategies for controlling hazards and reducing risks

• What the law says
An understanding of the law on the use, removal and disposal of asbestos

• Asbestos removal
A demonstration of how asbestos is removed with particular attention to what to look for if enclosures are found
• AM courses start at 09:00
• PM courses start at 13:00


Suitability - Who should attend?

This training course is designed for those who are likely to encounter asbestos either in a property management sense or for those trades likely to work directly or indirectly with materials that could be asbestos.

Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a UKATA certificate of attendance valid for 1 year (Category A).

The course is recognised by the UK Asbestos Training Association (UKATA) and meets the requirements of the control of asbestos regulations 2012.

Asbestos awareness courses are delivered at any HSS Training Centre nationwide on our scheduled days or can be organised at your premises as a dedicated course.
