Oscar Pistorius' elder brother Carl is being treated in intensive care following a head-on collision with another car on Friday night, local media has reported.

The crash is understood to have occurred close to Modimolle in the Limpopo province when a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction swerved and collided with his car on the N1.

He sustained fractures to his right forearm, leg and left foot, as well as a hip injury and lacerations to his liver and heart, according to the reports. Carl was returning from a business trip when the incident took place.

His uncle Arnold Pistorius said in a statement that Carl had been badly hurt, but “is out of danger”.

"Carl's vehicle was hit head-on by another car that had swerved from the opposite side of the [N1] highway into... oncoming traffic," he said.

"Carl was badly hurt but we are thankful that he is out of danger. He was transferred to a hospital in Pretoria."

A colleague had been in a different vehicle and witnessed the crash, he added.

In 2013 Carl was acquitted of culpable homicide after being involved in a collision with a female motorcyclist in 2008 who later died.
