The Sunderland manager, Peter Reid, has made a £3.5m bid for the Rangers and United States midfielder Claudio Reyna. Reid put in his offer for the American World Cup captain yesterday and hopes to do a quick deal for a player he sees as the ideal alternative to West Ham's Trevor Sinclair.

Rangers have rejected the offer so far but could let Reyna go as he has just 18 months left on his contract. News of Sunderland's bid could also spark interest from other English teams, although Reid has more money to spend than most at the moment.

The Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Bosnich's attempt to rebuild his career has suffered a blow after he was ruled out of action for a month with a thigh injury sustained against Everton on Sunday. Bosnich had only just returned to first-team football after a frustrating nine months on the sidelines at Stamford Bridge since signing from Manchester United in January.

Everton's injury-prone striker, Duncan Ferguson, has had an operation on his damaged ankle and will be out for a minimum of two weeks.
