What is marketing?

Marketing is integral process for every business as it’s ultimately an integral part of the communication process. During the communication process, the business informs, generates awareness, or persuades the consumer(s). In other words, marketing can be described as the process of identifying consumers, informing them about a product or service and its merits, or lack of.

Advertising is often confused with the concept of marketing; however, advertising is actually a subset of marketing. Marketing takes in the complex process of creating the customer, identifying the consumers’ needs, keeping the consumer, and satisfying the consumer. Simply put, marketing is everything the company does to find consumers and keep to them, while advertising is one of the tools used in marketing to communicate the company’s offering.

In the business world, with the consumer as the focus of its activities, it can be concluded that marketing is one of the premier components of Business Management - the other being Operations (or Production).
