What is involved in project management?

Effective project managers are required for a project to be successful. Such a project manager guides the project through all its stages, from start-up / analysis / development through to execution / monitoring and project closure.

Demand for these successful project managers is increasing and there is now a large number of project management courses available. While some project management courses focus on the supervisor's role and are industry non-specific, other courses are customisable for specific industries or even towards specific projects.

Projects and project management

Formally defined, a project is a temporary effort to produce a unique product, service or service. In other words, a project is a temporary effort to achieve a specific objective. The project manager is responsible for achieving the goals.

With a successful project, the project’s budget is not exceeded, the project’s goals are met, employees are motivated and the project’s deadline is met. With a project manager course, delegates can learn to deliver a successful project.

Depending on the goals, expectations, budget and timeframe, certain projects will be easier, harder, longer or shorter than others. For an inexperienced project manager, it might be very difficult to bring together all the pieces and ensure that all stakeholders are pleased with the end result.

Delivery methods of project management courses

Project management courses come in a vast range of formats to suit you and your organisation.

After you have found a project management course that meets your needs, ask the course provider for more information about their course teaching methods. For instance, trainers can come to your office (in-house training), you can attend an open course with delegates from other companies or you can take an online/distance course.

Points to consider regarding your course are:

  • Where will the course be held? In-company, in the student's home, at one of the course providers’ locations, or online?
  • How will the course be run?
  • Can the course accommodate your specific industry?
  • Will the expected finishing level of the course match your requirements?
  • What qualifications does your course teacher have?
  • What experience does your teacher have in your professional area?
  • What opportunities for organised social interaction for continued learning are provided?

PRINCE2 Foundation & Practitioner

PRINCE2 (Projects in Controlled Environments) is a method of achieving effective project management. In recent times, PRINCE2 has become a standard method of practice in both the public and private sectors in many countries. PRINCE2 has its origins in Britain in the 80s at local government levels.

PRINCE2 is the second edition of the project management method, which is a registered trademark of the Office of Government Commerce in Great Britain and is widely recognised and used in the private sector, both in the UK and internationally.

Take a PRINCE2 Certification and gain the skills, tools, confidence and qualifications to successfully manage and deliver projects in the workforce. A PRINCE2 qualification will give delegates the ability to use skills and techniques to managing projects within your organisation with common systems, procedures and language.

As a result of a PRINCE2 training programme, you will make fewer mistakes, better learn from those mistakes that you do make, and ultimately, save money and effort.

PRINCE2’s key features are:

  • its focus on business justification
  • a defined organisation structure for the project management team
  • its product-based planning approach
  • its emphasis on dividing the project into manageable and controllable stages
  • its flexibility to be applied at a level appropriate to the project.

PRINCE2 qualifications are separated into two levels, the PRINCE2 Foundation and the PRINCE2 Practitioner. The PRINCE2 Foundation is considered the beginners level for people needing to learn PRINCE2 basics and its terminology. The Foundation programme is followed by the PRINCE2 Practitioner, the highest level qualification of PRINCE2. The Practitioner qualification is suitable for those needing to manage projects within a specified PRINCE2 environment.

Agile Project Management (AMP) Training

Agile Project Managament (AMP) is another project management methodology that promotes and encourages frequent inspection and adaptation processes, a leadership philosophy that encourages teamwork, organisation skills and accountability.

Best practices are used and implemented to allow rapid delivery of high-quality software, and a business approach that aligns development with customer needs and company goals.

Know your own skill level and your own goals

Before taking a project management course, consider your proficiency as a project manager and your ability and confidence to manage project in daily or business situations. The other essential consideration before deciding on project management course is to know your needs.

Take into account the areas you wish to improve in and note down any specific requirements you have as a project manager. Browse the different project management course proficiency levels and talk to the course providers about your goals and if they can focus on your professional area, such as finance, IT, construction, marketing, etc.

Whatever your needs, you can be confident that the right content in your project management course will soon have you meeting your objectives.

Project management courses are available for those starting out in the industry as well as for the professional looking to stay abreast of the latest developments.
