Background:

  • 1. Assumptions about current management practices
    • There is a distinct gap between employee performance in SMEs and in foreign-owned companies.
    • Job satisfaction of employees in SMEs tends to be lower than in foreign-owned companies.
    • Many managers think that their employees? inefficiency is due to employee ability, since SMEs have trouble attracting the most qualified staff in light of competition with foreign-owned companies.
    • When assigning jobs to employees, managers seldom provide employees with the right information.
    • Managers usually do not set clear work standards and therefore have no grounds to effectively evaluate employee performance.
    • Discipline reprimands, pay cuts, or dismissals is used to encourage better performance, but the disciplinary action does not always improve employee behavior.
    • Cash rewards are considered the most important motivator, but rewards are given at set times like New Year or on other holidays and special achievements often go unnoticed or unrewarded.
    • Managers pay little attention to creating conditions that allow employees to develop their abilities, and they show little concern for helping employees who already do a satisfactory job to become outstanding workers.
    • Managers seldom provide feedback to employees, especially in the form of constructive criticism.
    • Many managers are not aware of their responsibility for motivating employees. Motivating employees is often left up to company policy and is not flexible enough to deal with individual cases.
