Corporate Training for Teams

Course description

Leading Across Boundaries

This course will develop leaders who can set direction and promote collaboration across organisational boundaries, inside and outside the organisation, resulting in more effective collaboration among functions, divisions, and teams as well as suppliers, partners, and customers.

In today’s highly matrixed organisational structures, cross-boundary coordination and collaboration are essential. Leaders are increasingly required to lead not just “down”
in their business units, but also “across and out” - setting direction and promoting collaboration among their teams, with other work units, and with other organisations such as suppliers, partners, and customers. When leaders and their people cannot collaborate across boundaries effectively:

  • Turf battles can slow decisions and reduce productivity.
  • Innovation is stifled because people’s intelligence and creative go untapped.
  • The organisation is ultimately stripped of its ability to thrive in today’s increasingly speed-enabled environment.

Training Course Content

This course is often run as a 2-day face-to-face event.

This programme will enable your leaders to:

  • Generate more effective collaboration among functions, divisions, and teams, as well as suppliers, partners, and customers
  • Create a compelling context for a cross-boundary endeavor so that people will want to work together
  • Gain support and involvement from the right mix of players who can successfully move the cross-boundary initiative forward
  • Improve personal ability to lead without direct authority

AchieveForum’s research points to five key action areas that are central to leading across boundaries effectively: a compelling context, the right players, support and momentum, collaboration, and non-positional leadership.

Leading Across Boundaries contains six modules:

  • Introduction to Leading Across Boundaries introduces the programme by identifying participants as leaders of cross-boundary endeavors and describes the need to lead across boundaries today. It also introduces the research-based leadership action areas that drive the success of a cross-boundary endeavor (CBE) and allows participants to evaluate their CBE according to those action areas.
  • A Compelling Context provides an experience (Flazeebo Tournament) of what it feels like when context is missing, and introduces the elements of a compelling context and how to create one.
  • The Right Players provides the opportunity to identify and understand how to enroll a more diverse and skilled team of players and stakeholders to a CBE.
  • Support and Momentum provides the opportunity for participants plan how to build support and momentum for their CBE through effective application of three messaging principles—two of which come from Malcolm Gladwell’s “tipping point theory.” In addition, participants use a case study to reflect on and apply the leadership practices associated with creating a compelling context, gathering the right players, and building support and momentum.
  • Collaboration provides knowledge and planning tools for fostering collaboration between contributors to their effort and between people in different parts of the organization on a continuous basis. Participants explore how to lead their teams to collaborate through communicating and reinforcing the need for collaboration and through learning how to manage unproductive conflict.
  • Non-Positional Leadership allows participants to review the five key practices of non-positional leaders, assess how well they currently use the practices, plan for improvement, and plan their next cross-boundary endeavour.
