The Essential Updates course is a one day course covering key technical areas and personal development. 

Each session will provide crucial updates to key areas, such as commercial contracts, consumer law, corporation and employee taxation.

9.00am Commercial Law Update

  • Commercial Contracts
    • notice clauses – the pitfalls of inadequate notice and service
    • exclusion clauses – further judicial comment on how to resolve interpretation disputes
    • variation of contract – Supreme Court guidance on ‘no oral modification’ clauses
    • implied terms – three recent cases where the court agreed to an implied term
    • good faith – new case law on ‘relational contracts’ and implied terms of good faith
    • liquidated damages – latest guidance from the courts in a B2B context
  • Consumer Law
  • EU New Deal for Consumers – what does it mean for you?
  • Data Protection
  • GDPR – 6 months on – examples of enforcement action

  • Personal tax - update points
  • Corporation tax and business tax update issues
  • Employee taxation: keeping on top of tax-efficient remuneration
  • VAT update, including possible post-Brexit models for VAT and customs duties
  • Making Tax Digital - where are we now?

2.30pm Negotiation Skills

As a result of this session you will be able to:

    • understand the attributes of a successful negotiator
    • use different negotiation styles depending on the circumstances of each negotiation
    • plan for a negotiation
    • be more effective in opening a negotiation and offering concessions
    • read your counter-party and deal more effectively with aggressive negotiators
