Certified European Passive House Designer
The internationally recognised, performance-based energy standard in construction
Passive House is an energy performance standard that provides a high level of indoor air quality and a significant reduction in space heating requirements compared to the standard practice for UK new builds.
This course provides the training, skills and confidence needed to pass the Passive House exam, set by the Passive House Institute (PHI).
Learners are provided with the skills and knowledge required to achieve the Certified European Passive House qualification and contribute to the design of residential Passive House projects.

CPD: 50 hours
After completing the course learners will be able to
- Understand the basic concepts, definitions and economics of Passive House.
- Understand how thermal envelopes, airtightness, thermal bridging and HVAC systems work in Passive House.
- Understand how thermal bridges work in Passive House.
- Explore the Passive House Planning Package (PHPP).
The course will provide you with the skills and knowledge needed to start working on residential Passive House design projects, after passing the PHI exam.
Training Course Content
This training is aimed at architects and other design professionals with experience in energy efficient design, who wish to gain the Certified European Passive House qualification and acquire skills in designing Passive House projects. It also suits those with an interest in building energy standards.
Members of the following organisations are eligible for a 15% discount:
- RIAS.
- RIBA.
- CIBSE.
- AECB.
- Passive House Trust.
Learners should also note that as part of this course you will be required to purchase the PHPP 9 (2015 or newer) software and manual. This can be purchased from the AECB at a cost of £160+VAT for non-members and is required for the online modules. A printed copy of the PHPP manual can be obtained from the PHI shop.
