This course is the perfect stepping stone for those of you who wish to join the childcare sector, whether as a childminder, nanny, or nursery assistant. It will also be invaluable to students hoping to someday establish their own child-minding practice.

This course contains 13 diverse and exciting units, all of which have been constructed to give students the level of knowledge required to understand and effectively practice playwork. By clicking on the ‘Snapshot’ tab above, you can see an outline of the course’s syllabus.

The course will begin by providing students with an in-depth understanding of the Playwork principles, which are at the core of the National Occupational Standards. These standards summarise the importance of play, and the role of a playworker within childcare. It is essential that students achieve a firm grasp of these concepts if they are to carry out this work in the future.

As the course progresses, students will gain further insight into the specific practices involved in playwork, such as methods of observation, managing playwork and play possibilities. They will also receive training on topics which are related to the practice of childcare more generally, such as safeguarding the wellbeing of children, behaviour management and working with colleagues. Students will therefore achieve an overall understanding of working with children, broadening the application of their training.
