Functional Skills in English

Functional skills English qualifications are designed for all levels of ability and focus upon the development of reading, writing and verbal communication skills aimed at building your confidence in each of these areas when transferring them to employment and daily life.

The qualification is recognised by colleges and employers. Some universities accept a pass at Functional skills Level 2 instead of GCSEs. The course is offered on a day or evening basis and the classes are usually 2 hours long.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification but prior to enrolment all applicants will be required to complete a short initial assessment to assess their current skill level. The results of the initial assessment will be used to inform the level of functional skill qualification for which you will be entered.

Training Course Content

The depth of topic covered will vary depending upon the level of study being undertaken. The course will enable you to build confidence in:

  1. Reading, understanding and analysing written information in detail
  2. Preparing for and delivering presentations and contributing effectively to discussions
  3. Writing text for specific purposes and audiences

Progression

Functional skills can be studied from Entry level 1 through to level 2, these qualifications are stepping stones to the GCSE. Once you have successfully completed one level of a functional skill you will have to option to progress onto the next level or GCSE, you will be required to complete another assessment prior to progressing onto the next level of qualification. To progress onto the next level you will be required to achieve a minimum of 65% on a diagnostic assessment.
