Introduction to Construction Adjudication - Chartered Institute of Arbitrators

This comprehensive one-day training course introduces the principles of Construction Adjudication. The training delivered by expert practitioners at the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators is designed to provide a thorough overview of adjudication tactics and a comparison of the main alternative dispute resolution processes - mediation and arbitration.

This interactive course will give candidates a basic understanding of the principles of good practice and procedure in adjudication, using instructor-led training, interactive debates and role-playing to demonstrate some of the procedures. Attendees will be required to complete an assignment at the end of the course which if successfully passed will lead to Associate Membership of CIArb.

Suitability - Who should attend?

This one-day introductory course in Adjudication is especially suitable for professionals who are new to the field of adjudication and have not had any formal legal training, or wish to wish to learn more about adjudication and its benefits to users.

The course is also aimed at practitioners who are considering further study to become Accredited Adjudicators or Associate members of CIArb.

Outcome / Qualification etc.

Upon successful completion of this introductory course in Adjudication, candidates will be issued with a certificate of completion and will be eligible to apply to be Associate members of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

Training Course Content

The Introduction to Construction Adjudication training course is designed to cover the following units:

  • Comparison of dispute resolution procedures
  • Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act 1996
  • Adjudication process
  • The Scheme for Construction Contracts
  • Contract procedures and rules
  • Preparing notices and submissions
  • The Adjudicator’s Decision

Assessment consists of one assignment that is distributed to candidates on the day of the course. Candidates will be given 28 days to complete and submit the assignment. The result is a pass or fail based on understanding and knowledge. Results are dispatched to candidates normally 8 to 12 weeks from the date of the conclusion of the assignment.


The cost of this programme delivered by Chartered Institute of Arbitrators is £396 including VAT per delegate. The course fee includes registration on the course, the first attempt at the assignment, study materials, lunch and refreshments throughout the day.

Continuing Studies

How will I be assessed?

Assessment of this course is completed through an online multiple-choice test accessed via LearnADR. Candidates will be given 28 days to complete and submit the assessment. Candidates must achieve a minimum overall mark of 55% to pass the course. Results are emailed to candidates after submission of the assessment.
