Introduction to Domestic Arbitration - Chartered Institute of Arbitrators

The goal of this one-day training course delivered by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators is to provide an understanding of the general principles of arbitration and a comparison of the main alternative dispute resolution processes –  mediation and adjudication.

This training course will give candidates an understanding of the principles of good practice and procedures in domestic arbitration and a thorough overview of the of the main alternative dispute resolution processes. The programme consists of a series of lectures, and includes a demonstration of arbitration hearing using role-playing. Candidates will be required to complete a final assignment which if successfully passed will lead to Associate Membership of CIArb.

Suitability - Who should attend?

This training course in Domestic Arbitration is suitable for candidates who are new to the field of arbitration and have not had any legal training and wish to learn more about arbitration. The programme is aimed at professionals who are considering further study to become Chartered Arbitrators or who wish to become Associate members of CIArb. There are no formal pre-requisites to this course.

Outcome / Qualification etc.

Upon successful completion of this introductory course in Domestic Arbitration, candidates will be awarded an Introductory Certificate and will become eligible to apply to become Associates of CIArb.

Training Course Content

The Introduction to Domestic Arbitration training course is designed to cover the following units:

  • Comparison of dispute resolution procedures
  • Arbitration Act 1996
  • Powers and jurisdiction of the arbitrator
  • Statement of case
  • Preliminary meetings
  • Costs and interest
  • Procedure at the hearing
  • Essentials of an award

Assessment consists of one assignment that is distributed to candidates on the day of the course. Candidates will be given 28 days to complete and submit the assignment. The result is a pass or fail based on understanding and knowledge. Results are dispatched to candidates normally eight to twelve weeks from the date of the conclusion of the assignment.

Continuing Studies

How will I be assessed?

Assessment of this course is completed through an online multiple-choice test accessed via LearnADR. Candidates will be given 28 days to complete and submit the assessment. Candidates must achieve a minimum overall mark of 55% to pass the course. Results are emailed to candidates after submission of the assessment.
