Introduction to International Arbitration - Chartered Institute of Arbitrators

The goal of this one-day training course delivered by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators is to provide an understanding of the general principles of international arbitration and a comparison of the main alternative dispute resolution processes – domestic arbitration, mediation and adjudication.

This training course will give candidates an understanding of the principles of good practice and procedure in international arbitration and a thorough overview of the of the main alternative dispute resolution processes. The programme consists of a series of lectures, discussion workshops and includes a demonstration arbitration hearing using role-play learning. Candidates will be required to complete a series of pre-course questions and a final assignment.

This training course in International Arbitration is designed for those that wish to learn more about international arbitration and its benefits to users. It is also suitable for professionals who are new to the field of international arbitration, who have not had legal training and who want to gain an awareness of international arbitration. The programme is also aimed at those who are considering further study to develop their knowledge in the field of international arbitration and gain membership with the Institute.

Outcome / Qualification etc.

Upon successful completion of this introductory course in International Arbitration, candidates will be awarded an Introductory Certificate in International Arbitration.

Delegates may further progress onto Module 1 of the Arbitration Pathway.

Training Course Content

The Introduction to International Arbitration training course is designed to cover the following units:

  • Comparison of Dispute Resolution Procedures
  • Essential features, laws and rules: The UNCITRAL Model Law
  • Composition, Powers and Jurisdiction of the arbitral tribunal
  • Organising the Proceedings
  • Costs and Interest
  • Hearings
  • Arbitral Awards, drafting and enforcement
  • Statement of Claim and Defence
  • Exercise in drafting and arbitration clause

Assessment consists of one assignment that is distributed to candidates on the day of the course. Candidates will be given 28 days to complete and submit the assignment. The result is a pass or fail based on understanding and knowledge. Results are dispatched to candidates normally eight to twelve weeks from the date of the conclusion of the assignment.


The cost of this programme delivered by Chartered Institute of Arbitrators is £396 including VAT per delegate, which includes registration on the course, the first attempt at the assignment, study materials, lunch and refreshments throughout the day.

Continuing Studies

How will I be assessed?

Assessment of this course is completed through an online multiple-choice test accessed via LearnADR. Candidates will be given 28 days to complete and submit the assessment. Candidates must achieve a minimum overall mark of 55% to pass the course. Results are emailed to candidates after submission of the assessment.
