CIPD Foundation Award in Employment Law

This qualification programme provides you with a comprehensive introduction to employment law and explores the influence of employment legislation and the legal requirements crucial to the effective management of the employment relationship.

If your objective is to understand the impact of employment law at the start of the employment relationship, recognise the main individual rights that the employee has during that relationship, and identify the issues to address at the termination of the relationship, then this foundation level qualification in employment law is for you.

Suitability - Who should attend?

The CIPD Foundation Award in Employment Law is for you if you:

  • are embarking on, or aspiring to a career in HR or employee relations
  • are already working in a support role in HR, and seeking to develop your knowledge and skills while gaining a professional qualification
  • have responsibility for HR activities and decisions within an organisation without a specialist function.

    This is a foundation level programme and no prior knowledge/understanding of employment law or experience in HR is required.

    Benefits of the qualification

    On completion of the programme, you’ll be able to:

    • understand the impact of employment law at the start of the employment relationship, including:
        • the context within which the employment relationship operates and the impact of internal and external factors
        • different types of contracts including permanent, temporary, fixed-term and casual
        • employment status and how it affects the employment relationship
      • recognise the main individual rights that the employee has during the employment relationship, including:
        • work-life balance and an overview of the regulations - holidays, working hours, rest periods and night working
        • family related legislation - the legal protection and an appreciation of the rights relating to maternity, paternity, adoption, parental and dependants’ leave, and flexible working
        • national minimum wage
        • discrimination - impact of discrimination law on the employment relationship; an overview of the areas covered by the Equality Act, direct and indirect discrimination, harassment and victimisation.
        • impact of legislation on policies and procedures
      • identify the issues to address at the termination of the employment relationship, including:
        • handling dismissals fairly
        • discipline and grievance procedures 
        • redundancy – consultation, selection and the process of handling redundancies
          • exit interviews – the importance of understanding the reasons employees leave the organisation.

        Outcome / Qualification etc.

        Please note that on successful completion of the programme, you’ll be awarded the CIPD Level 3 Foundation Award in Human Resources Essentials and your CIPD Awarding Body certificate will reflect this. An accompanying transcript to the certificate will highlight the specific Award unit studied.
