Suitability - Who should attend?

Applications are welcomed from a wide range of disciplines with a first or second class honours degree, applicants must show an awareness of health or health-related care issues.

For those students whose first language is not English, one of the following qualifications is also required:

IELTS: 7.0 overall; with at least 7.0 in the listening, reading, writing and speaking sections
GCSE: English language grade C

Please note that due to changes in the UKVI's list of SELTs we are no longer able to accept TOEFL as evidence of English language for students who require a CAS as of April 2014.

Applicants from the European Economic Area / Switzerland coming to study in the UK may need to apply for a visa or entry clearance to come to the UK to study. /p>

The application rules vary depending on the length of the course:

  • Students on courses of more than 6 months
  • Students on courses of less than 6 months
  • Students on a pre-sessional English Language course

Please note: If you require a Tier 4 student visa to study in the UK, you cannot undertake any City University London courses on a part-time basis.

The programme gives a degree in Adult Nursing Postgrad Diploma.Successful graduates from this Diploma in Adult Nursing will be registered by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) which provides a professional qualification which is internationally recognised.

Postgraduate Diploma Nursing Conversion to MSc

Students who have successfully completed their Post Graduate Diploma in Nursing at City University London should consider "topping up" their degree to a masters degree; MSc in Nursing. Students who have successfully graduated from the Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing at City University London can convert to an MSc within 3 years of completion (this usually means starting the conversion within 2 years of finishing the Postgraduate Diploma).

Entry to this programme is not automatic, and places are limited. Students whose PG Dip were awarded with a distinction or merit will be at an advantage.

In order to be awarded a MSc, students are required to complete a dissertation, which is a major piece of research.

For your dissertation you may choose different formats for your research, the options will be explained to you during two half-study days. You will also have one or two supervisors to help you in developing your work. The submission takes one of two forms, either a small scale piece of research, written up in the style of a journal article (this doesn't have to be submitted or published for the award of an MSc), or a 15,000 word dissertation. Most students do the conversion on a part-time basis (half to one day per week). The MSc conversion takes 12 months.

Training Course Content

Students are given the opportunity to combine theoretical study with clinical experience.You will be part of a 'community of practice' where you can work in some of London's leading hospitals and community settings. This will provide you with a unique opportunity to provide culturally sensitive care within a diverse world city.

The diploma is taught by expert staff who are leaders in the field of Adult nursing.

The School previously incorporated the St Bartholomew School of Nursing and Midwifery - this gives students a unique opportunity to benefit from over a 100 year teaching history.

You will have the option to upgrade your Postgraduate Diploma to an MSc during the final year by undertaking additional part-time modules.

In the first year of your Adult Nursing Diploma your study will include clinical and communication skills and ethics. Throughout the course you will develop knowledge in the principles and application of biology, physiology and pathology. During the course you will also study modules directly related to the specialist area of nursing you have chosen. There is also shared learning between mental health, child and adult fields.
