These roles can be in a broad range of areas, including all forms of software or hardware development, design and analysis of algorithms, data structures and systems, data analysis and research into computational methods in diverse areas, such as industrial applications, media, vision, sound, security or health.

Graduates starting a new business can benefit from City's London City Incubator and the University's links to Tech City. Students can participate in our professional placement programme, which is supported by the Professional Liaison Unit. This allows students to undertake their final project within an industrial or research placement over an extended period of time.

Training Course Content

There are five core modules on MSc Advanced Computer Science.

  • Understand, use and develop advanced data structures and algorithms.
  • Analyse time and memory and complexities.
  • Use alternative representations for efficient computation (frequency domain).

Readings in Computer Science

  • Understand foundations of research in computer science with subject experts.
  • Learn about research areas in computer science.
  • Prepare and present research topics.

Advanced Database Technologies

Students also choose three electives from a list that includes:

  • Object-oriented programming in C++
  • Data mining
  • Data visualisation

  • Pervasive computing
  • Digital signal processing and audio programming
  • Software agents
  • Service oriented architectures
  • Machine learning
  • Neural computing

All students will also undertake an individual research project.

The MSc can be taken as a one year full-time course, or over up to 28 months part-time. On completion of eight taught modules and an individual project students will be awarded a Master of Science (MSc) degree.

Taught modules are usually delivered as 20 hours or lectures plus 10 hours of labs or tutorial sessions. Students are also expected to undertake individual study (reading or relevant activities) related to the course content.

Assessment for each module is by coursework and examination.

The individual project (full-time) is carried out over the summer period, and if done without a placement, lasts approximately 14 weeks or 600 hours. If undertaken within an industrial or research placement, the project period extends to up to six months.
