Advanced Practice in Health and Social Care (Advanced Nurse Practitioner - Adult; Child; Neonatal) MSc - a City University degree programme

The course offers advanced learning skills in direct care practice, leadership and collaborative practice which can improve quality in patients and client services across many organisations of health care. Nurses will gain expert advice and practice in contemporary theoretical skills and knowledge for getting advanced practice. The course is sure to develop skills in data analysis and greater understanding of health and social care practices used by advanced social care communities.

Some of the major advantages of this course are better quality care practices and measures used in decision-making centres and service redesigning. You will also get a better understanding of the working methodologies used by senior practitioners and healthcare professionals.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Applicants should hold a lower second class honours degree or the equivalent from an international institution.

For students whose first language is not English, one of the following is also required:

  • A first degree from a UK university or an overseas institution recognised by the University as providing adequate evidence of proficiency in the English language, for example, from institutions in Australia, Canada or the USA
  • IELTS: 7.0
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: 72.

Please note that due to changes in the UKVI's list of SELTs we are no longer able to accept TOEFL as evidence of English language for students who require a CAS as of April 2014.

Candidates who are not from the European Economic Area / Switzerland and are coming to study in the UK may need to apply for a visa or entry clearance to come to the UK to study. /p>

The way to apply may vary depending on the length of the course taken; there are different rules for:

  • Students on courses of more than 6 months
  • Students on courses of less than 6 months
  • Students on a pre-sessional English Language course

Please note:Candidates requiring a Tier 4 student visa to study in the UK, cannot undertake any City University London courses on a part-time basis.

Outcome / Qualification etc.

The programme offers an Advanced Practice in Health and Social Care (Advanced Nurse Practitioner - Adult; Child; Neonatal) MSc. As a graduate students will be able to influence nursing practice at both direct and indirect levels through the development of services and the application of research to clinical practice. The course prepares students for a range of roles including advanced nurse practitioner, nurse consultant and senior nurse manager in all healthcare settings working across the lifespan. Successful completion of the course fulfils the requirements for advanced practitioner roles in a range of health and social care contexts and qualifies students to apply for research posts and to conduct independent research.

This programme has been accredited by the RCN Centre for Professional Accreditation until September 2018.

Training Course Content

The normal period of registration for a part-time Masters degree is two years' taught programme for part-time students (plus up to one year for dissertation).

The course includes two core modules, a further four route-specific modules and a research dissertation. Alternatively students can take modules from this Masters degree as standalone CPPD (Continuing Personal and Professional Development) courses. In this case, course costs might vary. Core modules:

  • Introduction to research methods and applied data analysis (30 credits)
  • Critical approaches to advanced practice (15 credits)
  • Dissertation (60 credits).

Child and Adult route modules:

  • Advanced physical assessment across the lifespan (15 credits)
  • Critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning across the lifespan (15 credits)
  • Independent and supplementary non-medical prescribing (15 credits)
  • Pathophysiological principles for advanced practice (15 credits)

Neonatal route modules:

  • Advanced physical assessment for neonates (15 credits)
  • Critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning for neonates (15 credits
  • Independent and supplementary non-medical prescribing (15 credits)
  • Advanced Neonatal Pathophysiology (15 credits)

Students will learn from a variety of student-centred and patient focused teaching, learning and assessment strategies aimed at developing and assessing different knowledge, skills and attitudes. Learning strategies involve shared learning across Adult, Child and Neonatal routes with further consideration and specialisation for intensive branch specific tutorials.

Expenses

The cost of the programme is:

  • Part-time EU: £4,000 per year (2015/16)
  • Part-time Non EU: £8,000 per year (2015/16)
