The MSc Advanced Practice in Health and Social Care (Midwifery) is a flexible programme which gives important guidelines in academic and practice level mechanisms. The course aims to provide better learning practices in revolutionising health care and social care management. In addition, the course is aimed at developing a research-focused workforce and creating better methodologies for society’s dynamism in demographic health and developments in technologies.

The course provides important opportunities in challenging and rewarding careers for professionals seeking advancements in their current positions at their healthcare organisations. Courses can be catered to the concentrations selected and a pre-designed course curriculum. Important lessons in latest theoretical and clinical developments will be taught to professionals in social and health care provision with important developments in critical thinking and research skills for independent research. Suitability - Who should attend?

Applicants should hold a lower second class honours degree or the equivalent from an international institution.

For students whose first language is not English, one of the following is also required:

  • A first degree from a UK university or an overseas institution recognised by the University as providing adequate evidence of proficiency in the English language, for example, from institutions in Australia, Canada or the USA
  • IELTS: 7.0
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: 72.

Please note that due to changes in the UKVI's list of SELTs we are no longer able to accept TOEFL as evidence of English language for students who require a CAS as of April 2014.

Applicants from the European Economic Area / Switzerland coming to study in the UK may need to apply for a visa or entry clearance to come to the UK to study. /p>

The application rules vary depending on the length of the course:

  • Students on courses of more than 6 months
  • Students on courses of less than 6 months
  • Students on a pre-sessional English Language course

Please note: If you require a Tier 4 student visa to study in the UK, you cannot undertake any City University London courses on a part-time basis.

The programme offers an Advanced Practice in Health and Social Care (Midwifery) MSc / Postgrad Diploma / Postgrad Certificate.This course allows practitioners flexibility in developing specialist skills and knowledge at a highly demanding academic and practical level. The course will prepare students for a range of roles including midwife consultant and clinical leadership.

Training Course Content

The normal period of registration for a Masters degree is one year's taught programme for full-time students (plus up to one year for dissertation) or two years' taught programme for part-time students (plus up to one year for dissertation).

The normal period of registration for a Postgraduate Diploma is one year's taught programme for full-time students or two years' taught programme for part-time students.

The normal period of registration for a Postgraduate Certificate is one year's taught programme for part-time students. Postgraduate Certificates are not offered on a full-time basis. The maximum period of registration for a Postgraduate Certificate is two years.

Students undertake up to seven modules including three core elective modules and two optional modules.

Alternatively students can take modules from this Masters degree as standalone CPPD (Continuing Personal and Professional Development) courses. In this case, course costs might vary. For further information please click on the CPPD links below each module.

Core multidisciplinary modules:

  • Introduction to research methods and applied data analysis (30 credits)
  • Critical approaches to advanced practice (15 credits)

Discipline specific modules:

  • Advancing midwifery: theory knowledge context and practice (online) (15 credits)
  • Managing risk in midwifery (15 credits)
    Apply for this module as a standalone CPPD course
  • Knowledge, evidence and skills for normal birth (15 credits)

Elective/optional modules:

  • Assessment for neonates and infant (15 credits)
  • Critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning for neonates (15 credits)
  • Leadership for practice and service delivery (15 credits)
  • Supporting and assessing learning in practice settings (15 credits)
  • Enhancing critical care skills in midwifery (15 credits)
  • Child protection: working together, managing risk and resilience (15 credits)
  • Child and adolescent mental health: early identification and assessment (15 credits)
  • Promoting child and adolescent psychological development (15 credits)

Students who successfully complete all modules can progress to the dissertation. Successful completion of the dissertation leads to the award of an MSc.

The cost of the programme is:

  • Full-time EU: £7,500 (MSc) (2015/16)
  • Part-time EU: £3,750 per year (MSc) (2015/16)
