Advanced Practice in Health and Social Care MSc / Postgrad Diploma / Postgrad Certificate - a City University degree programme

The programme offers healthcare professionals a platform for honing their skills in Health and Social Care. The course gives added flexibility in terms of advanced practices in social and health care for achieving unparallel abilities in practice, clinical excellence and innovation by undertaking high quality evidence-based research.  Candidates will gain the ability to utilise decision-making skills to their advantage on highly professional contexts. Moreover, professionals will be able to advance their skills and knowledge in research conduction and leadership undertaking.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Applicants should hold a second class honours degree or the equivalent from an international institution in a relevant subject.

For students whose first language is not English, one of the following is also required:

  • A first degree from a UK university or an overseas institution recognised by the University as providing adequate evidence of proficiency in the English language, for example, from institutions in Australia, Canada or the USA
  • IELTS: 7.0
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: 72.

Please note that due to changes in the UKVI's list of SELTs we are no longer able to accept TOEFL as evidence of English language for students who require a CAS as of April 2014.

Applicants from the European Economic Area / Switzerland coming to study in the UK may need to apply for a visa or entry clearance to come to the UK to study. /p>

The application rules vary depending on the length of the course:

  • Students on courses of more than 6 months
  • Students on courses of less than 6 months
  • Students on a pre-sessional English Language course

Please note: If you require a Tier 4 student visa to study in the UK, you cannot undertake any City University London courses on a part-time basis.

Outcome / Qualification etc.

The programme offers an Advanced Practice in Health and Social Care MSc / Postgrad Diploma / Postgrad Certificate.Successful completion of the course will allow students to enhance skills in practice, teaching and research and can lead to posts in administration, management and health research, in a variety of different public and private settings. Students can go onto advanced higher-grade senior health and/or social care practitioner roles in specific specialist areas. It qualifies you to apply for research posts and to conduct independent research.

The flexible nature of the course makes it particularly suitable for professionals with highly specific requirements for development, at City we can provide advice on the options available so students can maximise the opportunities that are available.

Training Course Content

The normal period of registration for a Masters degree is one year's taught programme for full-time students (plus up to one year for dissertation) or two years' taught programme for part-time students (plus up to one year for dissertation).

The normal period of registration for a Postgraduate Diploma is one year's taught programme for full-time students or two years' taught programme for part-time students.

The normal period of registration for a Postgraduate Certificate is one year's taught programme for part-time students. Postgraduate Certificates are not offered on a full-time basis. The maximum period of registration for a Postgraduate Certificate is two years.Alternatively students can take modules from this Masters degree as standalone CPPD (Continuing Personal and Professional Development) courses. Core Modules:

  • Introduction to Research Methods and Applied Data Analysis (30 credits)

  • Critical Approaches to Advanced Practice (15 credits)

  • Dissertation (60 credits)


Optional Modules:

Students have the opportunity to complete an additional five modules of 15 credits offered across the School of Health Sciences CPPD portfolio.

Students completing the two core modules plus one optional module totalling 60 credits can exit with a Postgraduate Certificate. On successful completion of seven modules (120 credits) students can exit with a Postgraduate Diploma. The completion of the dissertation leads to a MSc (180 credits).

2014 programme specification

A blended approach to learning and teaching is adopted including university-based taught modules; e-learning and work-based learning. Modules are run by experienced practitioners and leading researchers, using a variety of direct and interactive teaching methods. Students will learn in large and small multi- disciplinary groups and will be supported and encouraged to participate in independent learning. There will be extensive use of the University's Virtual Learning Platform - Moodle - for a more interactive learning experience.

Expenses

The cost of the programme is:

  • Full-time EU: £7,500 (MSc) (2015/16)
  • Part-time EU: £3,750 per year (MSc) (2015/16)
  • Full-time Non EU: £15,000 (MSc) (2015/16)
  • Part-time Non EU: £7,500 per year (MSc) (2015/16)
