Advanced Practice in Health and Social Care (Ophthalmic Nursing) MSc / Postgrad Diploma / Postgrad Certificate - a City University degree programme

The programme in Health and Social Care is flexible and caters to the changing needs of health and social care. New technologies in healthcare and creative working practices are being used by professionals all around the world and this course includes all the essentials to deal with those.

The course will give new and efficient ways of dealing with practices for better life quality and service redesigning.

The course teaches new developments in theories and clinical developments in relation to ophthalmic nursing. The course focuses on important research skills and critical thinking concerning professional developments in nursing.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Applicants should hold a lower second class honours degree or the equivalent from an international institution.

For students whose first language is not English, one of the following is also required:

  • A first degree from a UK university or an overseas institution recognised by the University as providing adequate evidence of proficiency in the English language, for example, from institutions in Australia, Canada or the USA
  • IELTS: 7.0
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: 72.

Please note that due to changes in the UKVI's list of SELTs we are no longer able to accept TOEFL as evidence of English language for students who require a CAS as of April 2014.

Those coming from regions outside the European Economic Area/Switzerland, need to apply for visa clearance or entry clearance /p>

There are different rules for applying depending on the length of the course:

  • Students on courses of more than 6 months
  • Students on courses of less than 6 months
  • Students on a pre-sessional English Language course

Please note: If you require a Tier 4 student visa to study in the UK, you cannot undertake any City University London courses on a part-time basis.

Outcome / Qualification etc.

The programme offers an Advanced Practice in Health and Social Care (Ophthalmic Nursing) MSc / Postgrad Diploma / Postgrad Certificate.This course will enhance skills in practice, teaching and research leading to roles in nurse management, student support and as ophthalmic nurse specialists in a range of public and private settings. The course is also suitable for nurses considering a post in research.

Training Course Content

The normal period of registration for a Masters degree is one year's taught programme for full-time students (plus up to one year for dissertation) or two years' taught programme for part-time students (plus up to one year for dissertation).

The normal period of registration for a Postgraduate Diploma is one year's taught programme for full-time students or two years' taught programme for part-time students.

Core modules include:

  • Introduction to research methods and applied data analysis (30 credits)
  • Critical approaches to advanced practice (15 credits)
  • Dissertation (60 credits).

Core elective modules include:

  • Glaucoma (15 credits)
  • Vision in the aged (cataract and age-related macular degeneration (AMD)) (15 credits)
  • Medicines management (15 credits)
  • Diabetic eye disease (15 credits)

Optional modules:

Students have the opportunity to complete an additional module of 15 credits offered across the School of Health Sciences' Continuing Personal & Professional Development (CPPD) portfolio. Students must gain 60 credits for a Postgraduate Certificate and 120 credits for a Postgraduate Diploma. The addition of a dissertation leads to an MSc.

A blended approach to learning and teaching is used with teaching methods such as: lectures; self-directed study; tutorials; action learning sets, class-based seminars; reflective study; enquiry based learning; workshops; individual and collaborative activity and presentations.

Students will learn in a variety of multidisciplinary groups and will be supported and encouraged to participate in independent learning. There will be extensive use of the University's Virtual Learning Platform - Moodle - for a more interactive learning experience. How will I be assessed?

Assessments are varied to meet the practice and academic challenges of a Masters level course, while recognising the need for motivating, realistic and relevant activity. Assessment strategies include coursework, examinations, portfolios, minilabs, case studies, reports, seminar presentations, skills schedules and objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs).   • Full-time EU: £7,500 (MSc) (2015/16)
  • Part-time EU: £3,750 per year (MSc) (2015/16)
  • Full-time Non EU: £15,000 (MSc) (2015/16)
