Automotive Engineering MSc - a City University degree programme

The course teaches latest developments in automotive engineering. The course enhances development opportunities in automotive engineering for professionals which is essentially the application of engineering principles to the design and analysis of the automobile in order to satisfy a performance specification.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Applicants should hold a lower second class honours degree in mechanical or automotive engineering or a related scientific or engineering discipline, or the equivalent from an international institution.

Consideration is given to candidates who can demonstrate, by work experience in an appropriate field, the ability to undertake the course.

Additionally, the University works in partnership with KIC London to provide preparatory courses for international students. Foundation and Pre Masters courses at KIC London offer comprehensive support to students including regular one-to-one tuition. Progression to the University is guaranteed if you complete the KIC London course at the required level.

For those students whose first language is not English one of the following qualifications is also required:

  • IELTS: 6.5.

City's Automotive Engineering MSc has been accredited by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and provides a path for graduates to gain Chartered Engineer status. Blending theory and practice, this course develops the broad skills and knowledge base required by automotive engineers, providing a platform for career development. You will be equipped with the skills and confidence needed to fulfil leading engineering roles with critical thinking and creativity. Training Course Content

City University London's internationally-recognised Research Centre for Energy and the Environment's core research activities are in automotive engineering, providing excellent computational and experimental facilities, including a number of modern optical IC engines and advanced optical instruments for different optical diagnostic methods.

The course requires that each student completes a research project which will:

  • Focus your research interests
  • Develop your report writing
  • Enhance your presentation, critical thinking and analytical skills.

Modules include:

Core modules:

  • Internal combustion engines
  • Performance of internal combustion engines
  • Vehicle engineering and design
  • Computer-aided design with CATIA
  • Advanced Mechatronics

Four elective modules from:

  • Computational fluid dynamics
  • Dynamics of structures
  • Combustion fundamentals and applications
  • Renewable energy
  • Energy utilisation and management
  • Mathematical modelling in CAD
  • Introduction to control.


The course is taught by staff from the School of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences and some external industrial experts. Teaching methods include lectures, tutorials and seminars. Throughout the programme, teaching and learning strategies are designed to encourage independent self study and teamwork, creativity and critical thinking.



The cost of the programme is:

  • Full-time EU: £9,000
  • Part-time EU: £4,500 per year
  • Full-time Non EU: £14,000
  • Part-time Non EU: £7,000 per year

The Rosie Keane Memorial Scholarships

The two Rosie Keane Memorial Scholarships are worth £5,000 each. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic achievement, educational background, contribution to the wider community, financial need and being the first lawyer in the family. They are only open to female students.
