Business Economics / International Business Economics MSc - a City University degree programme

The programme prepares professionals with quantitative skills in real-world business and economic policy issues. Professionals completing this course will be able to gain employment prospects in management consultancy, multinationals, government agencies and business and finance.

Suitability - Who should attend?

You should have some mathematical background (A-level, IB, AP or any other equivalent secondary school qualification) and either of the following:

  • a 2.1 (or equivalent) undergraduate degree in economics or related discipline (e.g. Finance);
  • a 2.1 (or equivalent) undergraduate degree in business, management, politics, law, accounting, psychology, quantitative sociology or financial journalism.
  • a 2.1 (or equivalent) undergraduate degree in a quantitative discipline (such as mathematics, engineering, computer science or a natural science).

Students with a good 2.2 in one of the above disciplines might be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Other Suitable Qualifications

You will benefit from having a working knowledge of microeconomic principles, mathematics and statistics. In order to help you if you have a shortfall in these areas, we run pre-sessional courses prior to the start of the academic year that will provide the necessary background.These courses are primarily aimed at those who have not studied economics for a few years and may need some revision of maths, statistics and/or microeconomics. The three courses aredesigned to ensure that you have a minimum acceptable level of knowledge in each area prior to commencing the course, so that once the full MSc course starts, all students share a common core of basic knowledge.

If you do not qualify for direct entry, our partner INTO City University London offers an academic preparation programme - the Graduate Diploma in Business, Law and Social Science. The course offers a route to City University London through an excellent teaching and learning experience, located in purpose built study facilities. Successful completion of the Graduate Diploma at INTO City University London to the standard required provides guaranteed progression to this Masters degree.

  • IELTS: an overall score of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 for each sub-test

Training Course Content

Students have the opportunity to extend their previous education by focusing on business and economic policy issues.

There is a high demand for economics postgraduates who, by developing specialised skills on this course, have the ability to apply economic analysis and quantitative skills to business and economic policy issues.

You take five core modules (including the dissertation and research methods module) and three elective modules.

* Teaching

You will take part in lectures, seminars and computer lab sessions. In lectures, we introduce you to key theories, concepts and economic models. You will have the opportunity in seminars to solve applied problems, analyse case studies and discuss the latest academic research.


Assessment
You are assessed by coursework and examination. Your overall degree result is based on your performance in taught modules and the dissertation.

  • Every year the Marjorie Deane Financial Journalism Foundation offers one or two studentships, worth roughly £10,000 each, to students who have been accepted to do a Masters degree in Economics or Finance at a top UK university.
