Civil Engineering Structures (Nuclear Power Plants) MSc - a City University degree programme

The programme prepares professionals for the structural systems employed in Nuclear Power Plants. Candidates will gain an understanding of the design of buildings and other infrastructure in nuclear containment structures.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Applicants should have a minimum lower second class degree or equivalent overseas qualification in Civil, Mechanical or Nuclear Engineering.

For those students whose first language is not English or have not previously attended studies in English, the following qualification is also required:IELTS: 6.5, including 6.5 in the writing category.

Please note that due to changes in the UKVI's list of SELTs we are no longer able to accept TOEFL as evidence of English language for students who require a CAS as of April 2014.

If you are not from the European Economic Area / Switzerland and you are coming to study in the UK you may need to apply for a visa or entry clearance to come to the UK to study. /p>

The way that you apply may vary depending on the length of your course; there are different rules for:

  • Students on courses of more than 6 months
  • Students on courses of less than 6 months
  • Students on a pre-sessional English Language course

Please note: If you require a Tier 4 student visa to study in the UK, you cannot undertake any City University London courses on a part-time basis.

This programme, MSc in Civil Engineering Structures (Nuclear Power Plants) is for students interested in the structural aspects of nuclear power plants. Training Course Content

In addition to the research skills module and dissertation, this course involves studying eight core modules and one elective module.
Some coursework assignments will require you to apply the theory that you have learned to specialised problems relating to the field of nuclear power plants.

  • Dynamics of Structures
  • Design of Concrete Structures
  • Design of Steel and Composite Structures
  • Design of Nuclear Structures and Foundations

  • Dissertation.

Elective modules

  • Earthquake Analysis of Structures
  • Analysis of Steel and Concrete Structures for Blast and Fire Exposure.


The course is taught by staff from theSchool of Mathematics, Computer Science & Engineeringwith contribution from industry experts, mainly in the form of lectures, but case studies and IT laboratory sessions and seminars are also used where appropriate.

Modules are shared between two ten-week teaching terms running from October to December and January to March. Although work for the MSc dissertation commences during the second term, most of the research work is carried out during the summer months.


The cost of the programme is:

  • Full-time EU: £9,000
  • Part-time EU: £4,500 per year
  • Full-time Non EU: £14,000
  • Part-time Non EU: £7,000 per year
