Critical Thinking and Diagnostic Reasoning - Neonatal - CPD accredited course at City University London

CPD certified course, Critical Thinking and Diagnostic Reasoning - Neonatal, teaches advanced studies of physical assessments of infants and new born children. Critical thinking and reasoning and clinical judgment when it comes to diagnosing can be learned through this course along with medical examinations and assessment. Different methods are discussed and various problems are solved while undertaking multiple strategies. Approaches and methods of communicating with patients and their families are also covered in this course along with case management in advanced practice, and neonatal stabilisation and transfer. This course equips you with the ability to make clinical judgements and interpret clinical data on underlying pathophysiological processes using diagnostic reasoning.

Suitability - Who should attend?

This training course is for individuals who have:

BSc in Nursing or the equivalent. Posesses a qualified neonatal nursing certificate. A Band 6 neonatal nurse who is currently working on the neonatal unit.

Applicants whose first language is not English need to demonstrate their English language proficiency. The minimum requirements are:

  • IELTS: 7 overall with a minimum of 7.0 in each component.

Please note that due to changes in the UKVI's list of SELTs City University London no longer accept TOEFL as evidence of English language proficiency for students who require a CAS as of April 2014.

  • Methods of questioning/communicating with infants and families
  • Effective clinical decision making strategies supported by theoretical frameworks
  • Overall clinical examination processes
  • Methods of examining and managing medical and surgical neonates
  • In depth management, assessment and clinical examination of the following systems: Foetal to newborn transition, Respiratory, Cardiovascular, Neurological/Developmental, Gastro intestinal, Immunological, Liver/Renal
  • Methods of obtaining and communicating history taking and clinical examination findings
  • Models, measurement, and strategies in developing critical-thinking skills
  • Clinical decision-making
  • Diagnostic reasoning in practice the ability to interpret clinical findings in relation to underlying pathophysiological processes
  • Clinical Judgement
  • Problem solving and reflective practice in advanced practice
  • Case management in advanced practice
  • Neonatal stabilisation and transfer.
