Cyber Security MSc - a City University degree programme

An MSc in Cyber Security  provides important lessons in computer, network and information security.  Students will have a better understanding of the analytical, operational and development essentials in the technical and social aspects of the cyber security area.

One of the primary objectives of the MSc in Cyber Security is to practice security in an interdisciplinary coursework setting.

The course focuses on core areas of masters level computer science, such as research methods and scientific presentation and analysis skills. The programme enables students to engage with researchers to better their scientific knowledge and skills. The course can be structured according to preferences of the individuals based on their expertise in We offer options within the programme that allows you to develop your expertise in the more traditional technical aspects (such as cryptography and digital forensics).

The appropriate target group of the course are professionals looking to accelerate their careers in cyber security with a preferable first degree in computer science, business computing or applied mathematics and engineering.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Applicants should hold a second class honours degree from a UK university or the equivalent from an international institution in Computer Science or a related discipline with some mathematical content. Relevant industrial experience may also be considered for entry to this course.

For those students whose first language is not English, the following qualifications is also required:

  • IELTS: 6.5 (minimum of 6.0 in all four components).

Please note that due to changes in the UKVI's list of SELTs we are no longer able to accept TOEFL as evidence of English language for students who require a CAS as of April 2014.

Pre-sessional English

If you are not from the European Economic Area / Switzerland and you are coming to study in the UK you may need to apply for a visa or entry clearance to come to the UK to study. /p>

The way that you apply may vary depending on the length of your course; there are different rules for:

  • Students on courses of more than 6 months
  • Students on courses of less than 6 months
  • Students on a pre-sessional English Language course

Please note: If you require a Tier 4 student visa to study in the UK, you cannot undertake any City University London courses on a part-time basis.

The programme offers Cyber Security MSc. The course is designed for those who wish to extend their capability for an accelerated early career in cyber security.

Training Course Content

There are in total eight taught modules, six core and two elective modules with a full time individual project completed over the summer.
Students will choose electives to tailor the programme to their chosen career path.

In particular, the project component gives students an opportunity to carry out an extended piece of work at the cutting edge of games technology under the supervision of one of our specialist academic and research staff. Internship-based projects are also available.

  • Sociotechnical systems

The MSc in Cyber Security is a one year full-time course. On completion of eight taught modules and an individual project students will be awarded a Master of Science (MSc) degree.

The teaching and learning methods used are such that the levels of both specialisation of content and autonomy of learning increase as students progress through the programme. This progress will be guided by active researchers in cyber security, culminating in an individual project, an original piece of research, conducted largely independently with appropriate academic supervision.

The standard format is that taught modules are delivered through a series of 20 hours of lectures and 10 hours of tutorials/laboratory sessions.

Lectures are normally used to:

  • Present and explain the theoretical concepts underpinning a particular subject
  • Highlight the most significant aspects of a module's syllabus
  • Indicate additional topics and resources for private study.

The cost of the programme is:

  • Full-time EU: £9,000
  • Full-time Non EU: £14,500
