Education in the Workplace

Education in the Workplace - CPD accredited course at City University London

Expert healthcare and social care professionals while at the workplace may need to teach, supervise and assess others. It may be applicable for undergraduate and postgraduate students of clinical and other related programmes. Likewise, at workplaces, professional practice might involve helping new staff members with skills and information so that they can perform effectively. This module is designed to impart you with the knowledge of mentoring, teaching and assessing others, and to provide you with necessary insight into your own learning needs as well as ways to work on your existing skills.

Suitability - Who should attend?

This module is suitable for professionals-

Overseas students can only apply as part of a programme, not as a stand-alone module.

  • You must be a qualified health-care professional registered to practice in the UK.

The module requires you to be:

  • Working in a suitable practice area
  • Have a clinical mentor. For Nurses and midwives, this person should have at least a years' experience of mentorship and hold an NMC recognised mentorship award. They should have undertaken a mentor update in the previous 12 months and appear of their Trust's/employer's live register of mentors.

Applicants whose first language is not English need to demonstrate their English language proficiency. The minimum requirements are:

  • IELTS: 7 overall with a minimum of 7.0 in each component.

Please note that due to changes in the UKVI's list of SELTs City University London no longer accept TOEFL as evidence of English language proficiency for students who require a CAS as of April 2014.

Training Course Content

The module is unique in that it is facilitated entirely online, following a weekly seminar structure that students can access flexibly wherever and whenever convenient for them. Students are required to take an active role in online activities and forum discussions. All students are required to seek supervision for developing their mentoring or educational role within the practice setting.

The assignment for the module is a 2000 word critical review plus a portfolio of practice for all students from the nursing and midwifery professions. Allied professionals (such as radiographers) are not required by their professional body to complete a practice portfolio, and their assessment is a 3000 word essay discussing their teaching and learning practice.
