Course description

French Lower Intermediate (Year 3)

You can order escargots in a restaurant with panache, ask directions to the chateau and have a chat whilst queuing at the boulangerie. You are comfortable asking how much that jolie petite robe costs in the village market and can talk de la pluie et du beau temps with your French colleagues. But now you want to have a more sophisticated conversation in French.

This course is designed to improve fluency and understanding of the French language giving students the confidence to communicate in a social or work situation.

The course consists of one evening class a week for a total of 30 weeks; spread across three modules, the French Lower Intermediate short course is ideal for those with various commitments or working full time.

Learning objectives

Module 1

  • Talk about past activities;
  • Express agreement and disagreement;
  • Expressing emotions;
  • Talk about TV and social media;
  • Describe family and friends;
  • Talk about relationships;
  • Phone manners and making arrangements;
  • Talk about bank holidays, parties and going out;
  • Talk about daily routine, habits and memories.

Module 2

  • Talking about necessities and obligations;
  • Talk about the weather and seasons;
  • Describe someone's appearance and personality;
  • Talk about other countries, francophone countries;
  • Talk about past trips abroad, past holidays;
  • Making a purchase (presents...);
  • Talk about francophone countries;
  • Following instructions: a French recipe;
  • Expressing health problems;
  • Asking for help.

Module 3

  • Talk about films and shows;
  • Talk about preferences, tastes and giving opinions;
  • Understanding and using different levels of language;
  • Describing famous sites;
  • Ordering in a restaurant;
  • Telling a story;
  • Talk about future plans.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Prerequisite knowledge

The French Lower Intermediate short course is ideal if you have one  of the following:

  • approximately 60+ hrs prior formal study
  • successfully completed French Beginners Refreshers (Year 2)
  • a (good but) rusty French GCSE or JLPT N5

Modules are taught at progressive levels, starting with Module One in the autumn (October).

If you wish to join Module Two of the short course (in January), you must have completed Module One or be familiar with the content taught in Module One, specified in the What will I learn? section.

If you wish to enrol on Module Three of the short course (in April/May), you must have completed both Module One and Module Two or be familiar with the content taught in these two modules, found in the What will I learn? section.
