Course description

German Lower Intermediate (Year 2)

You will learn new structures and vocabulary around different topics to extend the range of expression in this highly communicative course. You will build on and advance listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and cover the main points in German grammar.

The course consists of one evening class a week for a total of 30 weeks; spread across three modules, the German Lower Intermediate short course is ideal for those with various commitments or working full time.

Learning objectives

Module 1

  • Share personal details;
  • Describing your daily work and home life;
  • Discussing the German education system;
  • Discuss plans for the future;
  • Talking about your career choices and work;
  • Understand and discuss leisure trends.

Module 2

  • Debate negative and positive aspects of work;
  • Understand and format a standard CV;
  • Talk about Berlin and its attractions;
  • Plan a weekend break;
  • Berlin’s past and present;
  • Discuss national stereotypes;
  • Discuss trends in food and eating in Germany.

Module 3

  • Talk about political systems and parties;
  • Compare how life has changed between generations;
  • Discuss health and fitness trends;
  • Discuss environmental issues;
  • Give pros and cons of an opinion piece;
  • Describe your media habits.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Prerequisite knowledge

The German Lower Intermediate short course is ideal if you have one of the following:

  • successfully completed the  German Beginners (Year 1) or German Summer Intensive short course
  • approximately 60 hours of prior formal study
  • a rusty (but good) German GCSE
  • be able to carry out an elementary conversation; talk about yourself; your daily activities and your hobbies; say what you like or dislike; knowledge of the present tense and common adverbs of frequency, have a notion of the perfect tense.

Modules are taught at progressive levels, starting with Module One in the autumn (October).

If you wish to join Module Two of the Lower Intermediate short course (in January), you must have completed Module One or be familiar with the content taught in Module One, specified in the  What will I learn? section.

If you wish to enrol on Module Three of the short course (in April/May), you must have completed both Module One and Module Two or be familiar with the content taught in these two modules, found in the  What will I learn? section.

English requirements

You will need to respond to instructions and read course documents in English.
