Course description

Japanese Beginners Refreshers (Year 2)

Take your learning to the next level with this Japanese Beginners Refresher course. An ideal follow-on from the Japanese Beginners course, you will build on your knowledge, fine-tune your skills and grow in confidence.

The course consists of one evening class a week, for a total of 30 weeks; spread across three modules, which is ideal for those with various commitments or working full-time.

Learning Objectives

Module 1

  • Talk about the characteristics of things and people
  • Existence of People and Things
  • Numbers and counters
  • Expressions how often you do something
  • Talk about what you want to do
  • Ask someone to do something for you
  • Verb conjugation / Verb groups / Verb て-form
  • Ask someone to do something for you
  • Introduce 40 kanji.

Module 2

  • Talk about weekend plans and travel plans
  • Ask permission to do something at someone's house
  • Forbid someone from doing something
  • Expresses ability or possibility
  • Describe what one has experienced in the past
  • Conversation in the plain style
  • Introduce 30 kanji.

Module 3

  • Express your opinion
  • direct speech and reported speech
  • How to express when
  • Noun modification by sentences
  • Talk about getting on and off means of transportation
  • Learn the statements involving receiving or giving actions
  • Conditional expression
  • Introduce 30 kanji.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Prerequisite knowledge

You should have one of the following:

  • approx 50-60 hrs prior formal study
  • successfully completed Japanese Beginners (Year 1)
  • be able to carry out an elementary conversation; talk about yourself (your nationality, where you work, where you live etc.); be able to talk about your daily activities and your hobbies; order in a café; describe a place and give directions; say what you like or dislike; have a good knowledge of present regular and irregular verbs, prepositions, possessive pronouns and common adverbs of frequency; have some notions of the past tense, the 'near past' (I've just…) and future tenses (I am going to/I will)

Training Course Content

Module One will cover topics from the textbook Minna no Nihongo (Lessons 8-14) - the textbook only uses Japanese characters, so you are expected to be able to read and write in Japanese (Hiragana & Katakana) before joining this course.

Module Two will cover topics from the textbook Minna no Nihongo (Lessons 15-20) - this will also include learning colloquial form in order to talk with your Japanese friends more naturally.

Module Three will cover topics from the textbook Minna no Nihongo (Lessons 21-25) - this will be more practical; you will be involved in listening practice from oral conversations, films and drama in natural speed.
