Japanese Beginners Summer Intensive (Year 1)

This course is an introduction to the Japanese language and way of life for the purpose of practical communication and the entire book “Japanese for Busy People” is covered in ten weeks. You will develop essential listening and speaking as well as reading and writing skills in Japanese. You will be introduced to Japanese characters (Hiragana, Katakana and very basic Kanji).

  • Describing locations;
  • Shopping;
  • Asking and telling the time;
  • Asking and telling telephone numbers;
  • Talking about your daily routine;
  • Talking about your week-end;
  • Reading and writing Hiragana;
  • Becoming familiar with some aspects of Japanese culture;
  • Using basic greetings when visiting people and receiving guests;
  • Receiving hospitality;
  • Giving compliments;
  • Expressing gratitude;
  • Ordering food at a restaurant;
  • Praising someone's possessions/ talk about your own;
  • Making a telephone call;
  • Talking about schedules in detail;
  • Reading and writing Katakana;
  • Being familiar with some aspects of Japanese culture;
  • Being introduced to someone;
  • Responding to an inquiry;
  • Being warned or advised;
  • Giving directions to a taxi driver;
  • Talking about getting on and off means of transportation;
  • Talking about lengths of staying;
  • Asking about travelling time;
  • Asking permission to do something/ ask someone not to do something;
  • Talking about what you are doing now;
  • Talking about where you live;
  • Like and dislike;
  • Expressing what you want to do;
  • Reading and writing very basic Kanji.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Prerequisite knowledge

This is a course for complete Beginners. However if you understand “Hiragana” to read and write before coming to the class, it will be helpful since the text book shows Japanese characters from the start.

If you are not a complete beginner and have some prior knowledge of Japanese, you may wish to join our course or join Module Two or Module Three of the  Japanese Beginners (Year 1) course or the  Japanese Beginners Refresher (Year 2) course. You can check your level using our online guidelines.

English requirements

You will need to respond to instructions and read course documents in English.
