Course description

Japanese Lower Intermediate (Year 3)

On commencing the course you should be able to use complicated structures with different conjugation patterns, such as the-form, nai-form, plain (dictionary) form, ta-form, fluently. You will learn new structures and vocabulary around different topics to extend the range of expression in this highly communicative course.

The course aims to cover 150 kanji before the end of Module Three so at least two hours of homework per week is essential.

The course consists of one evening class a week for a total of 30 weeks; spread across three modules, the Japanese Lower Intermediate short course is ideal for those with various commitments or working full time.

  • Describe what you lost at the station
  • Talk about what you want to do
  • Booking theatre tickets
  • Explain about the company transfer
  • Describe your symptoms to doctor
  • How to deal with parking ticket
  • How to give instruction
  • Enquire about ski tour
  • Introduce 50 kanji.

Module 2

  • I try to take exercise every day and eat a variety of foods
  • Kansai Airport is made on reclaimed land
  • I like putting things in order
  • I’m sorry to be late
  • I am worried if my son has made any friends or not
  • Could you keep my parcel?
  • Are you saving money to get married?
  • Introduce 50 kanji.

Module 3

Suitability - Who should attend?

Prerequisite knowledge

The Japanese Lower Intermediate short course is ideal if you have one of the following:

  • approximately 100-150 hrs prior formal study
  • successfully completed Japanese Beginners Refreshers (Year 2)
  • a (good but) rusty Japanese GCSE or JLPT N5

Modules are taught at progressive levels, starting with Module One in the autumn (October).

If you wish to join Module Two of the short course (in January), you must have completed Module One or be familiar with the content taught in Module One, specified in the  What will I learn? section.

If you wish to enrol on Module Three of the short course (in April/May), you must have completed both Module One and Module Two or be familiar with the content taught in these two modules, found in the  What will I learn? section.
