Course description

Maritime Law LLM

Maritime Law LLM - a City University degree programme

The Specialist LLM in Maritime Law provides students with knowledge and skills in niche practice of law i.e., maritime law. Being a very specialist field of law, it is offered only by a small number of universities in the UK.

The concepts covered in the programme include shipping contracts, marine insurance, international sale contracts, admiralty matters and arbitration.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Applicants should normally hold a good first degree in law, or an equivalent qualification in a related discipline, and must be fluent in written and spoken English. We expect applicants who are not nationals of a majority English-speaking country OR have not successfully completed an academic qualification, at least equivalent to a UK bachelor's degree, which was taught in a majority English-speaking country as defined by the UK Visas and Immigration, to have an overall IELTS score of at least 7.0.

Applicants with a first degree in a subject other than law will be considered, but it should be noted that this may restrict the choice of modules where content is dependent on a prior knowledge of law.

How do we make our decision?

In reaching our selection decisions we will take account of:

  • Academic performance
  • Reasons for choice of courses / career
  • Evidence of intellectual ability
  • References
  • Relevant work experience / activity
