Suitability - Who should attend?

  • Applicants should hold a lower second class honours degree or the equivalent from an international institution in an appropriate discipline
  • or a Certificate of Competence as Master or Chief Engineer: Class 1 Master Mariner or Class 1 Engineer and experience in one of these roles.
  • Industry experience in positions of responsibility is considered.
  • The selection process may include an interview.

Additionally, the University works in partnership with KIC London to provide preparatory courses for international students. Foundation and Pre Masters courses at KIC London offer comprehensive support to students including regular one-to-one tuition. Progression to the University is guaranteed if you complete the KIC London course at the required level.

For those students whose first language is not English one of the following qualifications is also required:

  • IELTS: 6.5

If you are not from the European Economic Area / Switzerland and you are coming to study in the UK you may need to apply for a visa or entry clearance to come to the UK to study. /p>

This course has been developed in partnership with The Honourable Company of Master Mariners. This Livery Company was founded in 1926, and is the oldest of the new Companies, and seeks to encourage and maintain a high and honourable standard of ability and professional conduct in the officers of the Merchant Navy and within the maritime industry generally.

In addition, to ensure that the course meets the high standards desired by the maritime industries a steering group, comprising senior members within the industry, overviews the course and its content.

This course is compatible with The MoD's Enhanced Learning Credits Administration Service (ELCAS) - an initiative to promote lifelong learning amongst members of the Armed Forces.

Training Course Content

The core elements of the course focus on maritime operations, management, law and technology and the related business environment. There is also an emphasis on the fields of port security and risk management, marine environmental and offshore studies, marketing and selected aspects of conceptual ship design. Students develop skills suitable for taking leadership and management responsibility in a wide range of maritime activities.

Students will gain a good understanding of maritime operations, management, marine law, accountancy and technology and the related business environment in which they work. The course will also provide technical knowledge of selected aspects of ship design and operation and/or related maritime land-based or offshore structures, sub-sea engineering/mining, environment, marketing, security, risk management and port operations. Students will develop skills to equip them for taking leadership and management responsibility in a wide range of maritime activities.

This course is delivered on either a full-time or a flexible, modular basis comprising intensive periods of attendance supported by work-based distance learning.

  • Maritime law
  • Maritime operations

  • Maritime technology
  • Maritime environmental issues.

Elective modules:

  • Marketing of marine services
  • Strategic planning for ports & shipping business
  • Security studies, accident investigation & crisis management
  • Ship & marine equipment design
  • Risk management
  • Offshore technology and operations

Completion of modules and examinations will lead to the award of a Postgraduate Diploma. Alternatively, if in addition, a project followed by a dissertation is undertaken by a student, this will lead to the award of a Masters degree.
