Suitability - Who should attend?

  • Applicants should hold a lower second class honours degree or the equivalent from an international institution in an appropriate discipline
  • or a Certificate of Competence as Master or Chief Engineer: Class 1 Master Mariner or Class 1 Engineer and experience in one of these roles.
  • Industry experience in positions of responsibility is considered.
  • The selection process may include an interview.

Foundation and Pre Masters courses at KIC London offer comprehensive support to students including regular one-to-one tuition. Progression to the University is guaranteed if you complete the KIC London course at the required level.

Pre-sessional English

For students studying in Piraeus

For those students whose first language is not English it is recommended that their standard of English is equivalent to IELTS: 6.5. Evidence of the level of attainment in English will be required.

If you are not from the European Economic Area / Switzerland and you are coming to study in the UK you may need to apply for a visa or entry clearance to come to the UK to study. /p>

The way that you apply may vary depending on the length of your course; there are different rules for:

  • Students on courses of more than 6 months
  • Students on courses of less than 6 months
  • Students on a pre-sessional English Language course

Please note: If you require a Tier 4 student visa to study in the UK, you cannot undertake any City University London courses on a part-time basis.

Training Course Content

MSc Maritime Operations and Management in Greece will develop your basic capabilities and knowledge that are necessary to gain an understanding for careers in maritime operations and management. You will also develop skills suitable for taking leadership and management responsibility in a wide range of maritime activities.

You will gain a strong understanding of maritime operations, management, marine law, accountancy and technology and the business environment in which shipping and the offshore industry work. The course will also provide knowledge of selected aspects of risk management, ship design and operation and/or related maritime land-based or offshore structures, sub-sea engineering/mining, marketing, security, risk management and port operations. You will develop skills equipping you for taking leadership and management responsibility in a wide range of maritime activities.

  • Maritime economics and finance
  • Maritime law
  • Maritime operations
  • Maritime management
  • Maritime technology
  • Maritime environmental issues.

Elective modules

Two modules to be selected.

Students can complete the taught part of the course wholly in Piraeus if they select the two electives that are offered in Piraeus. However, if they prefer, they can opt to take any of the other electives but this would require attendance in London for the duration of the chosen module.

  • Marketing of marine services (London and Piraeus)
  • Risk management (London and Piraeus)
  • Strategic planning for ports & shipping business (London only)
  • Security studies, accident investigation & crisis management (London only)
  • Conceptual ship design (London only)
  • Offshore technology and operations (London only).


Satisfactory completion of the modules and examinations will lead to the award of a Postgraduate Diploma. Alternatively, if in addition, a project followed by a dissertation is undertaken by a student, the satisfactory completion of this element will lead to the award of a Master of Science degree.

The course, which is a distance learning mode of an identical programme run in London, is delivered by staff from the School of Mathematics, Computer Science & Engineering conjointly with industry experts.

Throughout the course, teaching and learning strategies are designed to encourage independent self study and teamwork, creativity and critical thinking.

The compulsory modules' assessment is based on marks obtained throughout the year for coursework and end-of-year examinations. In the case of elective modules, these are assessed through substantial elements of coursework. In both the elective and compulsory modules presentation skills also feature.
