Course description

Master of Public Health MPH

Master of Public Health MPH - a City University degree programme

The MPH degree is the most widely recognised professional qualification for leadership in public health. The MPH programme aims to create leaders in public health willing to take up the  challenge of shaping the future of public health and in making a difference in the world.

Additionally, students will be learning a lot of practical and theoretical skills in public health sciences. You will be able to gain in-depth understanding of the evidence-based public health theory including global health, ethics in public health and social determinants of health. Some important skills and confidence elements will be bestowed in the students by the end of the duration of the course including the ability to lead projects across many areas such as health and social care, international agencies, pharmaceutical companies, NGOs, research institutions and consultancies.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Pre-requisites

  • Applicants should hold an upper second class honours degree or the equivalent from an international institution.
  • Relevant employment experience in the health sector is taken into consideration. Applicants who have a lower second class honours degree but have relevant employment experience in the health sector may be considered.

For those students whose first language is not English, one of the following qualifications is also required:

  • IELTS: 7.0

Please note that due to changes in the UKVI's list of SELTs we are no longer able to accept TOEFL as evidence of English language for students who require a CAS as of April 2014.

If you are not from the European Economic Area / Switzerland and you are coming to study in the UK you may need to apply for a visa or entry clearance to come to the UK to study. /p>

The way that you apply may vary depending on the length of your course; there are different rules for:

  • Students on courses of more than 6 months
  • Students on courses of less than 6 months
  • Students on a pre-sessional English Language course

Please note: If you require a Tier 4 student visa to study in the UK, you cannot undertake any City University London courses on a part-time basis.

Outcome / Qualification etc.

The MPH programme at City is designed to create leaders in public health who will take up the challenge of shaping the future of public health and in making a difference in the world. Graduates go on to work globally across a range of settings including UK's NHS, international organisations, NGOs, health care and pharmaceutical industries, local governments, and academic and research environments.

MPH graduates gain vital transferable skills which are applicable to all health and medical-related careers where attention to detail, conducting research and evaluation for evidence-based practice, and report writing are a career advantage.

In addition, graduates can use the strong foundation in public health theory and research methods gained on the course to pursue further doctoral level study.

Training Course Content

The course emphasises critical thinking, provides a comprehensive theoretical and practical training in a range of advanced qualitative and quantitative health research methods, and applied data analysis. In addition, modules on epidemiology, global health and the social determinants of health help develop competences and capabilities in public health theories and practice. The final dissertation provides an opportunity for students to design and carry out a major research project in public health.
