Course description

Medical Ultrasound MSc / Postgrad Diploma / Postgrad Certificate

Medical Ultrasound MSc / Postgrad Diploma / Postgrad Certificate - a City University degree programme

The course provides important training in obstetrics, gynaecology and/or abdominal ultrasound for interested professionals in developing skills in work based learning options. Innovative learning and assessment methods will be taught to students working in a varied learning environment. This course is apt for health care professionals having experience in radiography, nursing, midwifery or other related professions. Students will be able to achieve academic qualifications and clinical skills for pursuing careers in ultrasound.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Applicants should hold a minimum of a second class honours degree, or the equivalent from an international institution, in radiography, nursing, midwifery, or another relevant subject.

An appropriate professional qualification, such as a Diploma from the College of Radiographers, a Diploma in Nursing, or a Diploma in Midwifery may be accepted, subject to successfully demonstrating the required academic level by completing a pre-course assignment (early application is recommended).

Applicants should also have a clinical placement in a recognised ultrasound department for an average of three days per week. This placement must be arranged prior to applying for the course, as the University is unable to assist with arranging placements.

Closing date for the programme is mid-July although earlier closing dates may apply if all places have been filled before this date. Early applications are encouraged.

For those students whose first language is not English an IELTS score of 7.0 is required in all categories.

Please note that due to changes in the UKVI's list of SELTs we are no longer able to accept TOEFL as evidence of English language for students who require a CAS as of April 2014.

If you are not from the European Economic Area / Switzerland and you are coming to study in the UK you may need to apply for a visa or entry clearance to come to the UK to study. /p>

The way that you apply may vary depending on the length of your course; there are different rules for:

  • Students on courses of more than 6 months
  • Students on courses of less than 6 months
  • Students on a pre-sessional English Language course

Please note: If you require a Tier 4 student visa to study in the UK, you cannot undertake any City University London courses on a part-time basis.

Outcome / Qualification etc.

On completion of a postgraduate certificate or diploma you can apply for jobs as an autonomous practitioner, working in the NHS or private practice. Many of our graduates have become advanced practitioners, further developing their skills during their career, whilst others have travelled to Australia or New Zealand to enhance their careers.

Graduates from City University London have become managers of ultrasound departments, leading service changes and developing services to improve patient care. A number of graduates have developed their role in specialist areas, where they undertake research and training and engage in dissemination of their work at national and international conferences and in publications. Some of our graduates return to provide keynote lectures to future generations of ultrasound students or even take on the role of Programme Director running ultrasound programmes.

With a qualification from City University you can become an independent practitioner and set up your own company, providing services to local populations or travel the world and experience different ways of working.
