Mental health nursing provides strategies for proper physical and emotional security of the patients.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Applications are welcomed from a wide range of disciplines with a first or second class honours degree, applicants must show an awareness of health or health-related care issues.

Applicants must demonstrate competency in spoken and written English and numeracy through GCSE Maths and English at A*-C.

We also take into account previous work experience.

You will be required to have occupational health and enhanced Criminal records checks. References may be requested. Successful completion of Assessment of Prior Learning (APL) is required.

For those students whose first language is not English, one of the following qualifications is also required:

IELTS: 7.0 overall; with at least 7.0 in the listening, reading, writing and speaking sections
GCSE: English language grade C

Please note that due to changes in the UKVI's list of SELTs we are no longer able to accept TOEFL as evidence of English language for students who require a CAS as of April 2014.

If you are not from the European Economic Area / Switzerland and you are coming to study in the UK you may need to apply for a visa or entry clearance to come to the UK to study. /p>

The way that you apply may vary depending on the length of your course; there are different rules for:

  • Students on courses of more than 6 months
  • Students on courses of less than 6 months
  • Students on a pre-sessional English Language course

Please note: If you require a Tier 4 student visa to study in the UK, you cannot undertake any City University London courses on a part-time basis.

Successful Nursing diploma graduates will have an internationally recognised qualification and will be registered by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). The Postgraduate Diploma Mental Health Nursing will accelerate your career progression and open up a variety of fascinating career opportunities.

Postgraduate Diploma Nursing Conversion to MSc

Students who have successfully completed their Post Graduate Diploma in Nursing at City University London should consider "topping up" their degree to a masters degree; MSc in Nursing. Students who have successfully graduated from the Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing at City University London can convert to an MSc within 3 years of completion (this usually means starting the conversion within 2 years of finishing the Postgraduate Diploma). Once students have graduated they can enrol for the conversion in either September or January.

Entry to this programme is not automatic, and places are limited. Students whose PG Dip were awarded with a distinction or merit will be at an advantage.

In order to be awarded a MSc, students are required to complete a dissertation, which is a major piece of research. In order to facilitate this students are advised to undertake a taught module in research methods (15 credit and 30 credit versions available), if not completed before, which can be taken immediately prior to commencing the dissertation. Students undertaking the research module are eligible to a 50% discount on the module fee. If you are a PG Diploma Nursing graduate from before September 2012 then you must take and pass a 15 credit research module before you can register for the dissertation. You will be eligible for a 50% discount on this module.

Training Course Content

During the Mental Health Nursing diploma course you will combine theoretical study with clinical experience. At City you will gain experience of care delivery across a range of settings and environments in East London. You will have a unique opportunity to learn how to provide culturally sensitive care within a diverse world city.

This postgraduate degree is delivered by experts who are leaders in the field of mental health nursing practice, education and research.

You will have the option to upgrade your Postgraduate Diploma to an MSc during the final year by undertaking additional part-time modules.

Your learning will draw on areas including nursing, psychology, sociology and biology in order for you to develop your communication and evidence based clinical skills.

Our curriculum focuses on relationship centred care and will support you to develop effective working relationships with patients, service users, families and professional colleagues.

Postgraduate Diploma Nursing Conversion to MSc

The conversion fee for 2015-16 is £2,000 for Home/EU students and £4,000 for overseas students. Please note that fees are subject to change on an annual basis.
