Course description

Public Health (School Nursing, Health Visiting and District Nursing) MSc / Postgrad Diploma

Public Health (School Nursing, Health Visiting and District Nursing) MSc / Postgrad Diploma - a City University degree programme

Nursing is a course which changes from graduate level to higher studies levels owing to the changes and developments in health and prevention of community care procedures. As a result, many courses offer specialist training in clinical, research and leadership knowledge relevant in hospital contexts.

Suitability - Who should attend?

The course is only available to students seconded by the NHS.

Applicants should hold an upper second class honours degree or the equivalent from an international institution. Applicants for the District Nursing route should be registered with the NMC as adult nurses. Applicants for the School Nursing and Health Visiting routes should be on parts one and two of the NMC register.

For those students whose first language is not English, the following qualification is also required:

  • IELTS: 7.5.

Please note that due to changes in the UKVI's list of SELTs we are no longer able to accept TOEFL as evidence of English language for students who require a CAS as of April 2014.

If you are not from the European Economic Area / Switzerland and you are coming to study in the UK you may need to apply for a visa or entry clearance to come to the UK to study. /p>

The way that you apply may vary depending on the length of your course; there are different rules for:

  • Students on courses of more than 6 months
  • Students on courses of less than 6 months
  • Students on a pre-sessional English Language course

Please note: If you require a Tier 4 student visa to study in the UK, you cannot undertake any City University London courses on a part-time basis.

Outcome / Qualification etc.

Successful completion of School Nursing and Health Visiting routes on this programme will enable you to gain second registration on the third part of the NMC register (professional award) plus a Postgraduate Diploma academic award. You will also be able to practise as a school nurse or health visitor. Successful completion of the District Nursing route will enable you to record a district nursing qualification with the NMC.

The programme is approved by the NMC. It is aligned to NMC standards of proficiency for specialist community public health nurses (School Nursing and Health Visiting routes). It is also aligned to V100 standards (community prescribing) and specialist professional qualification standards for District Nursing.

Previous graduates have taken up posts as school nurses, health visitors and district nurses in local Trusts.

After a period of consolidation and sometimes further study, our graduates can take up specialist or management posts within the NHS.

Postgraduate Diploma Public Health (Health Visiting / District Nursing) Conversion to MSc

Students who have successfully completed their Post Graduate Diploma in Public Health at City University London should consider "topping up" their degree to a masters degree; MSc in Public Health. Students who have successfully graduated from the Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health at City University London can convert to an MSc within 3 years of completion (this usually means starting the conversion within 2 years of finishing the Postgraduate Diploma). Once students have graduated they can enrol for the conversion in either September or January.

Entry to this programme is not automatic, and places are limited. Students whose PG Dip were awarded with a distinction or merit will be at an advantage.

In order to be awarded a MSc, students are required to complete a dissertation, which is a major piece of research. For your dissertation you may choose different formats for your research, the options will be explained to you during two half-study days. You will also have one or two supervisors to help you in developing your work. The submission takes one of two forms, either a small scale piece of research, written up in the style of a journal article (this doesn't have to be submitted or published for the award of an MSc), or a 15,000 word dissertation. Most students do the conversion on a part-time basis (half to one day per week). The MSc conversion takes 12 months. Students will need to complete their project within this timescale.

Training Course Content

To fully prepare students for specialist nursing roles in the community, the course offers students the opportunity to learn new knowledge and skills. It also promotes shared professional learning about clinical practice, evidence-based practice and leadership. Learning reflects current public health and community care policy agendas.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health is usually undertaken as an intensive one year programme, it may be undertaken over two years of part-time study. Students who have successfully completed the Postgraduate Diploma modules may then opt to undertake a dissertation module to complete the MSc in Public Health.
