Outcome / Qualification etc.

Graduates of Renewable Energy and Power Systems Management MSc are equipped with the skills to evaluate methodologies, analytical procedures and research methods using power systems engineering and state-of-the-art computational tools. They can also move into the design of sustainable electrical power systems, networks and regulatory frameworks.

Employment opportunities:

As a graduate of the MSc in Renewable Energy and Power Systems Management, you will be prepared for careers that encompass a variety of roles in the power industry, from technical aspects to management roles. Ensuring that electricity gets to the consumer is a huge undertaking. It involves aspects of mechanical, civil, electrical and electronic engineering on the technical side. There are also management, economical and statutory implications.

Previously our graduates have found jobs as engineers, managers and analysts in the power sector, with companies such as UK Power Networks, EON and EDF, as well as numerous energy companies overseas.

On successful completion of the programme, candidates may also with to further their research in the energy field by considering a PhD.

Training Course Content

The modules for this course are delivered over two semesters, with weekly lessons scheduled over two days a week. The third semester is spent completing a project that involves writing a dissertation and presenting findings.

This course is organised into eight modules provided on a weekly basis.

Modules include:

Introduction to Power Systems
Taught by a visiting lecturer from UK Power Networks, this module provides the basic concepts, knowledge and case studies of power systems.

Energy Utilisation and Management
In this module you will learn about the different approaches to efficient energy supply and management.

Systems Modelling
This module involves the mathematical modelling of a variety of engineering systems. Techniques of analysis system performance via these models are also studied.

Renewable Energy: Engineering Principles of Solar, Wind and Biomass Energy Supplies
Aspects of renewable energy such as the technologies involved and strategic polices are taught in this module.

Transmission and Distribution Systems Management
Also taught by our visiting lecturer from UK Power Networks, this module investigates challenges associated with distributed generation and integration of new renewable energy into electrical networks.

Power Systems Analysis and SimulationIn this module you will be taught how to use two pieces of industrial power systems simulation software: DIgSILENT and NEPLAN.

Power Electronics
This module provides a technical understanding of various switching and power conversion technologies, with emphasis on the conversion of electrical power from renewable energy sources.
