Telecommunications and Networks MSc - a City University degree programme

Communications and other aspects in business conducting have changed over the years including development of wireless devices and networks. Applicants should hold a second class honours degree or the equivalent from an international institution in an acceptable scientific, mathematical or engineering discipline.

Pre-sessional English

If you are not from the European Economic Area / Switzerland and you are coming to study in the UK you may need to apply for a visa or entry clearance to come to the UK to study. /p>

The way that you apply may vary depending on the length of your course; there are different rules for:

  • Students on courses of more than 6 months
  • Students on courses of less than 6 months
  • Students on a pre-sessional English Language course

Please note: If you require a Tier 4 student visa to study in the UK, you cannot undertake any City University London courses on a part-time basis.

Information and Communications Technology influences all aspects of life: health, entertainment, etc. Graduates of the MSc in Telecommunications and Networks are therefore prepared for careers in various fields of communications, such as wireless communications, optical communications, networks, security and cyber war and other fields, such as Civil Engineering, Energy industry, where IT and Telecoms are critical to the infrastructures.

Some examples of jobs obtained by graduates of the past few years include IT consultant, software test engineer, radio frequency engineer. Companies which hired graduates from this course in the past two years include Arup, McAfee, British Telecom and Amirit Technologies Inc.

After successful completion of the Telecommunications and Networks MSc course, candidates may consider further study in a PhD degree.

Training Course Content

The course draws on the knowledge and experiences of leading experts and active researchers working in Telecommunications and Networks. The expertise of the teaching team includes photonics, optical sensors, wireless communications, network security, and cryptography. The Telecommunications program is supported by research in photonic devices, fibre optic sensors, optical communications, wireless networks, digital signal processing, cryptography, network communications, and information security. The students are expected to work closely with the research teams to widen their knowledge and understanding of the state-of-the-art technologies in telecommunications and networks. This will provide a good foundation for students who chose to pursue a PhD after their MSc degrees.

The course is organised in modules which are taught and supervised over the 12 months period for a full-time programme.

  • Digital signal processing
  • Digital communications
  • Wireless communications
  • Multi-service communication networks
  • Lasers and optoelectronics
  • Optical communications
  • Research skills and techniques.

Completion of 8 modules and examinations will lead to the award of a Diploma. The completion of all the modules, examinations and a dissertation will lead to the award of a Masters degree.

The individual dissertation is developed in close collaboration with various research groups within the Instrumentation and Sensors Research Centre, as well as other groups in the School at the forefront of their technological field.

The programme consists of 9 compulsory taught modules, plus a dissertation. Four modules are taught in the first term Mondays and Fridays (10 weeks) and five modules are taught in the second term Mondays and Fridays (10 weeks). Exams take place at the end of first and second term and the dissertation work is completed during the summer term. The course format allows Full Time and Part Time study. Much support is given to students, part time and full time, with their preparation for the modules and in their project work.

Full-time students complete the programme in 12 months and are expected to devote a significant part of their non-taught hours to laboratory work, project work as well as private study.

The course format makes the programme attractive to those who wish to study part time while retaining full-time jobs. The Part Time students may attend only one day in a week mostly on Mondays or Fridays, with some laboratories in block weeks. The duration of a part-time programme is two years (this may be extended to three years in order to cater for individual circumstances).

Aims of the Programme

The overall aims of the programme are the advanced education of engineers and applied scientists intending to develop a rich knowledge of modern electronic communication systems, from devices, to systems, networks, protocols and their security and the development of expertise which will enable to handle problems in modern digital era.

Teaching and Learning Strategy

The teaching and learning strategy is based on lectures, supported wherever appropriate by coursework. Assessment for the taught elements of the programme is based on coursework and written examinations.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will gain knowledge of the fundamentals including communication devices, underlying principles, system analysis, protocols, network optimization, encryption and security and an exposure to challenging problems of emerging complex systems engineering applications.
