Analysis and Interpretation of Growth Strata in Deepwater Settings

The course addresses the interpretation of growth strata deposited in deepwater fold and thrust belts, salt basins and rift settings. The concepts and terminology of growth structures are explained and the factors controlling their development, such as sediment supply and rate and style of structural movement, are examined. Numerous examples demonstrating growth strata on 2-D and 3-D seismic data are analyzed to unravel the geometry and evolution of the structures. Practical interpretation exercises use seismic examples from around the world and are reinforced by active in-class discussion.

  • Concepts of fault-related folding: kink band migration, limb rotation etc.
  • Fault bend folds
  • Fault propagation folds
  • Trishear folding
  • Detachment folds
  • Triangle (wedge) zones
  • Imbricate and duplex structures
  • Exercises: Interpreting fault-related folds using concepts of thrusting, kink-band geometries and balanced cross sections

Growth strata in contractional structures

  • Basics of growth strata development, particularly in deepwater settings
  • Concepts of sedimentation rate versus fold uplift rate
  • Distinguishing kink band migration from limb rotation using growth strata
  • Using growth strata to determine the sequence of thrusting
  • Exercises: Interpreting growth strata in different contractional systems

Deepwater fold and thrust systems

  • Classification of deepwater fold and thrust systems (DWFTBs)
  • Differences between far-field and near-field DWFTBs and salt/shale detached systems
  • Development of growth strata in DWFTBs
  • 3-D reaction of deepwater channel systems to growing fold structures
  • Exercises: Interpreting deepwater fold and thrust systems through structural style and growth strata analysis: examples from the fold belts in the Deepwater Gulf of Mexico, Pegasus Basin, offshore New Zealand (Caribbean analog), NW Borneo DWFTB and other areas

Salt systems

  • Evolution and interpretation of salt diapirs
  • Development of growth strata in minibasins adjacent to growing salt diapirs
  • Growth strata associated with allochthonous salt systems
  • Challenges in interpreting salt-related growth strata
  • Exercises: Interpreting salt-related growth strata at varying scales in different salt systems (focused on deepwater settings: examples from the Deepwater Gulf of Mexico, Brazil, Angola and Gabon)

Rift systems

  • Normal fault systems and how they evolve over geologic time
  • Rift system anatomy and controls on 2-D and 3-D architecture
  • Tectonostratigraphic classification of rift systems
  • Development and analysis of growth strata in deepwater rift systems
  • Exercises: Interpreting growth strata in deepwater rift systems: examples from the late Jurassic Northern North Sea, Bay of Biscay and Celtic Sea Basins

Course delivery details

  • 8am-12pm CDT
  • Five 4-hour interactive online sessions presented over 5 days. A digital manual and exercise materials will be distributed to participants before the course. Some seismic interpretation exercises are to be completed by participants off-line.
