Practical Geocommunication

This course teaches geoscience students, academics and professionals how to engage effectively with various sectors of society. It impacts practical strategies for communicating the geosciences in ways that shift public perceptions and behaviours.

Suitability - Who should attend?

This course is aimed at any geoscientist who is, or is considering, a public outreach or engagement. This course is endorsed and accredited by The Geological Society of London, the European Federation of Geologists and the International Association for Promoting Geoethics.

  • Appreciate the importance of communicating the geosciences.
  • Communicate effectively in the geosciences through empathy, emotion, analogy and metaphor.
  • Create strategies and models to make your own work engaging to the public.
  • Appreciate and develop practical knowledge about various social media platforms and available tools to promote the geosciences.
  • Identify and confidently challenge false information in the media.
  • Understand the role of geoparks and geotourism, and be able to implement your learning into effective on-the-ground strategies for engagement.

Session 1

  • Why geocommunication?
  • Principles of any successful communication
  • Neurology of attention and memory formation
  • Geologizing: The use of analogy
  • Confronting distortions and manipulations in the media

Session 2

  • Social media platforms and effective engagement for growth
  • Auditing and maximising engagement
  • Case studies and activities
  • Geotourism and geopark projects
  • Discussion and open forum about learner ideas and projects
  • Conclusions and next steps

Course delivery details

  • 1.30-pm-2.30pm BST
  • Two 1-hour tutor-led online sessions presented over 2 days (mornings in North America and afternoons in Europe), combined with e-learning modules (about 10 hrs worth of assignments and exercises). A day will separate each interactive session to allow participants to complete the online assignments and exercises.
