Introduction to Refining Technologies & Refinery Conception - 4-Day Course by HOT Engineering

This comprehensive foundation course introduces participants to the basic principles of oil refining and related technologies. Different refinery types and their set-up and product slates are highlighted in this introduction course, providing sufficient knowledge to select them.

Participants will gain confidence through the following training methodologies:

  • Strengthening basic oil chemistry as strong foundation for understanding of refinery processes
  • Interactive training based on case studies
  • Providing data and information about major operational refineries world-wide as case examples

This course is suitable for you, if you are: 

  • A manager / employee with commercial or non-specific technical background, working in the oil & gas industry
  • Involved in financing, the supply chain or operation of oil refineries, whether small or large

Outcome / Qualification etc.

By the end of the course you will feel more confident to:

  • Read and understand refinery process diagrams
  • Discuss suitable refinery types and main technologies
  • Perform preliminary license selections for common technologies
  • Assess basic CAPEX / OPEX requirements for given refinery types
  • Evaluate project viability for refinery constructions

  • Basic oil (and organic) chemistry
  • Chemical and physical properties of crude oil and refinery products
  • Common product qualities (e.g. Euro V, etc.)
  • Main refinery processes
  • Utilities and infrastructure systems
  • Oil and product transport requirements
  • Nelson complexity index
  • Solomon index for refinery operations
  • Layout and location requirements/restrictions
  • CAPEX and OPEX evaluations
  • Introduction into refinery conceptual design
  • Overview of existing and operational refineries worldwide
  • Shifting product slates to meet market demands


The course fee includes tuition, course material, refreshments and lunch per session day and a 100 EURO non-refundable registration fee. Course fees do NOT include accommodation or living costs. Applicable taxes will be applied.
