Reservoir Characterisation and Quality from Drill Cuttings

Reservoir Characterisation and Quality from Drill Cuttings

The Reservoir Characterisation and Quality from Drill Cuttings allows participants to unlock the geological potential of drill cuttings, a data type that is often overlooked, using the rock typing cuttings analysis technique. The goal of this course is to give participants a broad overview of how cuttings derived rock property data can be obtained and integrated into typical reservoir geology work flows.

Suitability - Who should attend?

This course is suitable for those who are:

  • An E&P professional who would like to get more out of drill cuttings
  • A geologist, petrophysicist, reservoir engineer or production technologist
  • A graduate or new hire in geology, geophysics or petrophysics

How we Build Your Confidence:

  • Learning is by way of a mixture of lectures and exercises using actual examples.
  • This is a practical course, with a series of introductory and explanatory lectures complemented by workshops using microscopes to view and interpret drill cuttings.
  • You will interpret cuttings data generated during practical workshops bringing this data together with other reservoir geology concepts (e.g. sedimentology, depositional environments).

Outcome / Qualification etc.

Upon completion of this course, participants will feel confident in their understanding of:

  • How rocks break and how this can be exploited for reservoir information
  • Rock typing parameters including determination of lithology, grainsize, sorting and cement types (clastic and carbonate examples)
  • How to (semi) quantify drill cuttings derived data
  • How to estimate and (semi) quantify porosity and permeability
  • Applications, advantages and disadvantages of the rock typing technique
  • Application of the basics of rock typing using the microscope including the determination of rock typing parameters, lithologies, cement types, grain characteristics (e.g. sorting, rounding and grain relief) as well the estimation of porosity and permeability
  • The use of rock typing data to determine gross depositional settings, depositional cycles and bounding surfaces (e.g. unconformities, flooding surfaces)
  • How to integrate rock typing information with other data sources (e.g. wireline logs, core data, well tests)

Training Course Content

This course covers the following topics:

  • Review of reservoir geology
  • Basics of rock typing
  • Calibrating cuttings derived data to other data
  • Case study examples and interpretation methodology
  • Using microscopes to analyse drill cuttings and small core chips
  • Formulating a geological concept
  • Integrating rock typing data from microscope analysis with other data (e.g. wireline data)
