Negotiation Skills for Lawyers

This comprehensive training course gives delegates an in-depth understanding of the key principles of negotiation theory and helps them develop a range of related skills and techniques.

The course is led by a former practitioner and has a strong practical slant, relying on a diverse and comprehensive mix of exercises and simulations to draw out, and reinforce the key learning outcomes. Relevant points of the theory are contained in a detailed set of materials, which act as a useful reference source before, during and after the session.

This Negotiation Skills course has been designed for lawyers of all disciplines and is particularly suitable for less experienced negotiators.

  • Know about the two different negotiation theories;
  • Understand what your personality style is in relation to the negotiation styles;
  • Create strategies for a negotiation which will help you create options;
  • Deal with nerves and fears in a controlled manner; and
  • Know how to deal with difficult questions.

Training Course Content

This Negotiation training course is designed to cover:

  • Negotiation theory – an introduction to the main bodies of theory & schools of thought
  • Legal negotiation – how, and why, it differs from other types of negotiations; the role of lawyers in legal negotiations
  • Styles – a guide to the different negotiation styles and their application to different scenarios; the relationship between style and strategy
  • Essential negotiation skills - with an emphasis on listening & questioning techniques and an analysis of some of the key characteristics possessed by skilled negotiators
  • Preparing for a negotiation – what, and how, to plan, with reference to: each client’s objectives and underlying interests, the context of the discussions, alternative outcomes, BATNAs, settlement zones and walk-away positions  
  • Telephone and email negotiation – the dynamics at play, some common gambits & ploys; the added importance of certain skills and techniques

The cost of this training course is £165 + VAT per delegate.
