Crochet Projects

This course is designed for students with a range of Crochet skills including beginners who are eager to learn the technique of crochet and those who would like to improve and build upon their skills & techniques. All students should be excited about creating unique pieces of work using crochet techniques, exploring the potential of a range of textures, patterns and colour.

Suitability - Who should attend?

This course is aimed at people with no previous knowledge crochet and for those wanting to broaden their skills and techniques to take on more challenging projects.

Outcome / Qualification etc.

By the end of the class you should be able to:

  • Understand and apply a variety of crochet stitches and techniques to complete set projects.
  • Understand how to read a pattern and to choose yarn and needles that are appropriate for that project.
  • Understand the basic difference between yarns and needles, and how they can be applied in your set project.
  • Have evaluative skills to make decisions about the design and content of your projects

Training Course Content

At the start of each term you will learn crochet stitches and techniques through making samples. You will learn how to follow abbreviations and crochet patterns, change yarn colour and finish off your work to give a professional finish. Once you have learnt the basic skills you will begin a simple project. Those projects are:

Term 1: Sampler Blanket. Crochet skills and knowledge will be used and developed through making a crochet sampler blanket. Using a variety of crochet stitch patterns and granny square motifs you will make units which will be stitched together to make a blanket. These units could also be stitched together to make a different item such as a scarf or wall hanging.

Term 2: Accessories. Crochet skills and knowledge will be developed through making samples and small projects to make different accessories for yourself and the home. You will learn how to increase and decrease to make three-dimensional forms such as slippers, socks, mittens, purse, bags and baskets.

Term 3: An item to wear. Crochet skills and knowledge will be developed through making samples and tension squares to follow a pattern to make a wearable item of your choice. The course will cover a range of projects, with the aim for you to build upon your skills and understanding to make for example a stole, shawl, jacket, top or gilet.
