Course description

L1 Award in Practical Horticulture Skills: This course is suitable for those who are new to horticulture and who would like to begin to formalise their horticultural knowledge.
You will learn how to carry out a range of seasonal horticulture activities. You will learn, develop and practice the skills required for progression into the horticultural sector.
There will be a brief presentation of the key aspects of the course. You will then have the opportunity to have a one to one discussion with one of the tutors to ask any questions.
Your tutor will teach you by lecture/discussion and demonstration. You will undertake practical, seasonal horticulture tasks and be assessed on these. You will receive handouts and worksheets to enhance your understanding and consolidate your learning. One-to-one help will be available as appropriate. Your tutor will also introduce you to Newcastle City Learning’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).
All materials for your course, including most Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided by your tutor. However, it is a requirment of the course that you bring a pair of steel toe capped boots to wear when doing practical work. Please also bring a pen and notepaper as you will probably find it useful to take extra notes.

Suitability - Who should attend?

No previous knowledge is required but you should have a reasonable command of the English language. You will complete a learning contract and initial assessment to establish your training and support needs and any relevant previous experience.
